Don’s Death Certificate Arrives

Carole writes Howie At 09:42 PM 2/3/03 -0500:

Dear Howie,  I am glad you are there and safe.  I just got through judging the WOES photo contest and am getting ready to post the winners.  The contest raised 640.00 at 5.00 per entry and it was a hard decision.

Ch. 20 says they will send out a crew and film a one hour program on us and several PSA's.

A bobcat (Alachua Bob) was hit by a car in Gainesville and referred to us.  His pelvis was crushed and he is an older cat, so the vet doesn't think he will ever be able to go back to the wild.  One of the vet techs there is a big fan of ours from the web site and wants to see the facility, so she is driving him down tomorrow.

Don's death certificate arrived today.  I read it and looked out the window.  Some time later I realized the sun had gone down.  I don't know where I went.  It left me in a really weird mood.  This may be the closest thing I get to closure but many of the blanks were filled in with the word UNKNOWN so it didn't help much.

I bladed on the beach today.  That was nice.  I haven't done that in over a year.  The access road is a lot bumpier than Bayshore, but the view was wonderful.

All the stuff I was interested in redeemed today before the sale.  Turns out that trailer didn't have a septic and couldn't get one.  Learning that before the sale was very fortuitous.  I almost bid on a 2000.00 lot, but found out while researching the files this morning that there was a 44,500.00 lien on it that was held by the county, meaning it wouldn't go away.

I am exhausted, so I am going to wash my hair and go to bed.  I hope you manage to stay warm.  - Carole

Sorry it was a bad day for real estate, but glad it was a good one for WOES.

I can picture you in a trance with the certificate.  Seems like a natural and appropriate reaction, and I hope you do at least get some level of closure.  Whether that book is as fully closed as you would like or not, I hope I have opened another one that you can look forward to reading.

I had dinner with Salim tonight in a wonderful French restaurant, seated at the window seat looking out at NY at night.  Not a place I'd want to live, as much as Salim would like me to move up to work with him, but it really can be an interesting place.  Was sipping Cabernet and wishing you were here.  Perhaps sometime we could visit together?

I had totally forgotten that years ago Salim had visited WOES on my recommendation after I had been there.  So when I started to talk about it, he reminded me that he had been there.  And his reaction was much like Cameron's.  He remembered how awesome it was to be just a few feet from the tigers.  Salim is a very spiritual unusual person and quite a philosopher.  I think you will enjoy meeting him.  His sister is sort of a psychic coach who is able to diagnose illnesses and advise people.  Kind of runs in the family.

Anyway, time to turn in.  Since you won't read this until morning, I hope you had a good night with good dreams.  For the Minutes. - Howie

I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/

I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story.  My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
