Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act First Introduced
The Captive Wildlife Safety Act law began around 1998 and became law in Dec. 2003, and ever since we have been trying to close the loopholes that allow private ownership of big cats and cub handling. Thanks to the work of the Big Cat Coalition and the weekly calls Howie has led since our first meeting 7/25/2011, Rep. McKeon and Rep. Loretta Sanchez introduced the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act in the House (HR 4122) and Sen. Kerry commits to introducing into the Senate, which he did just prior to the elections.
We had been trying to close the loopholes in the 2003 Captive Wildlife Safety Act on our own and others in the industry; specifically HSUS and IFAW had introduced both state and federal bills, but none could get the traction necessary to pass. These bills went by several names including the Shambala Act, the Roar Act, Haley’s Act, and others. Now that all of the big animal protection groups were working together we are all hopeful that this common sense bill will become law. I wanted to just call it the Big Cat Act because the current name is a mouthful, but the group wanted to emphasize the public safety element of the bill.
I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/
I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
