When the religious leaders confront Jesus about His recent upheaval of what was passing for temple worship, they ask Him two questions: what authority He claimed and who gave Him this authority.  In offering them a legitimate answer in the form of a question, Jesus reveals their heart, effectively pulling back the mask of their own hypocrisy.
