Dear Mr. Van Norman,
Hoover, the tiger you helped guide us to import from Peru, is doing fabulously.
We have now been approached by the Ecoparque, formerly known at the Buenos Aires Zoo, about taking in a 12 year old cheetah. The government ended up taking over the zoo and deciding that rather than have animals in cages they would like to turn the zoo into a place to educate people about animals and conservation without having live animals. So, they are working to place the animals that were there.
Based on our experience with Hoover, we have looked for a suitable organization doing work in the wild on cheetah conservation to support financially with a $5000 donation to fulfill the requirement that the import should support conservation in the wild.
The organization we found that we felt is doing the best work in a way that is consistent with our values is the Mara Cheetah Project. Below is a brief description of the work and attached is their 2015 annual report. Before we make the donation I would very much appreciate your guidance as to whether you would find a donation to this organization suitable.
Further, this time we would be applying without the help of ADI's attorney, and I believe our counterparts in Argentina are not experienced in what they will have to do at their end. So I wonder if it might be possible to assign our application when we submit it to someone who would be likely to have the patience to help guide both us and our counterparts there? Thanks very much for any advice you can provide!
MARA CHEETAH PROJECT SUMMARY
At present, the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem is one of the two remaining strongholds for the global cheetah population. Whilst in the Serengeti there has been a long-term cheetah project running for over 25 years, surprisingly little is known about the cheetahs in the Greater Mara Ecosystem. As a result the Kenya Wildlife Trust set-up the Mara Cheetah Project in June 2013. Using a research-driven conservation approach the main objectives of the project are to:
Determine the current and long-term status of the cheetah population:
Collect baseline data on cheetah ecology and behaviour
Identify the threats that cheetahs are facing
Develop sustainable solutions to mitigate threats
This long-term project will have important implications for cheetah conservation both in Kenya and in the rest of Africa.
Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/
I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
