It’s the second podcast of the new season and this week we take a look at some language from the big games, including ‘fill your boots’ and the cliche ‘it’s a marathon not a sprint‘. We also look back at some of the good, the bad and the ugly from this week’s football – Brazil and own goals, while we also feature some of the big games from the Premier League in our predictions battle – including last year’s top two Leicester and Arsenal who meet at the King Power Stadium. You can check out the transcript for the show in the post below (Damian = DF).

DF: You’re listening to languagecaster’s football podcast
DF: Hello everyone and welcome to the show for all football fans who wish to improve their English language skills. My name is Damian and I am currently here in London where the weather is… bright and sunny – not weather usually associated with the Premier League. Now, as regular listeners will know, we are usually joined by Damon but he is on his way home to Japan as we speak and we will hear from him next week.
DF: This is our second show of the season and we have a busy football weekend ahead of us: the business end of the Olympic football competition is taking place this weekend with the final between hosts Brazil and Germany. Last week, we saw the Premier League in England, Ligue 1 in France and the Portuguese Liga all starting up and I’m sure Damon must be pleased with Liverpool’s start after their 4-3 away win at Arsenal. This weekend sees the start of the Spanish Liga, the Turkish Liga and Serie A in Italy – football in Europe is very much up and running.
Line up
Now, on this week’s show we’ll be looking back at some of the big stories from the world of football in our good, the bad and the ugly sections. After this we will be explaining a couple of phrases that have been in the football news this week and then will finish the show with our weekly predictions.
Quiz
DF: As many of you know the Rio Olympics have been taking place over the past two weeks and on this week’s quiz we want to know which country won gold in the men’s and women’s competitions four years ago in London. We’ll have the answer at the end of the show.
Good
DF: Well, it was a good week for Brazil as they reached the Olympic final after trouncing Honduras 6-0 in the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. They will face Germany in the final after they defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the other semi-final. Not only are Brazil looking for their first ever Olympic gold medal but they will also be looking for redemption after their 7-1 thrashing against Germany on home soil in the World Cup two years ago.
Bad
DF: It was a bad week for Irish
