Howie was asked to speak at an International Conference to 4000 people
Our speaker, Howard Baskin, is the Advisory Board Chairman of Big Cat Rescue, the only accredited sanctuary in Florida devoted to big cats and one of the largest sanctuaries in the world. In this talk he will explain from experience on the ground why the U.S. regulatory scheme cannot work, how it increases the likelihood of extinction of the tiger, and propose the solution.
He wrote the following as the draft for the theme of his talk:
THE NEGATIVE IMPACT OF US TIGER CUB PETTING ON PREVENTING EXTINCTION OF TIGERS IN THE WILD
As recently as 1990 there was an estimated 100,000 tigers in the wild. Today there are less than 4000. Preserving endangered species around the world from man induced extinction requires the cooperation of all nations. This is largely managed through the international treaty known as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna, or CITES (pronounced sigh tees). The nations of the world meet every two years at CITES Conventions to make decisions that fall largely on each nation to actually implement. The United States plays a leadership role in proposing positions and urging other nations to support those positions. In contrast, some countries seek to “farm” tigers and legalize the trade in tiger parts that drives the poaching that threatens the existence of tigers in the wild.
What is not well known is that the impracticality of enforcing the current regulatory scheme in the U.S., which results in these iconic animals living in miserable conditions in roadside zoos and in tiger cubs being ripped from their mothers at birth to use for cub petting and photo ops, impairs the credibility of the United States in its effort to oppose tiger farming and save the tiger.
Hi, I’m Carole Baskin and I’ve been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views. These are my views and opinions. If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story. The titles are the dates things happened. If you have any interest in who I really am please start at the beginning of this playlist: http://savethecats.org/
I know there will be people who take things out of context and try to use them to validate their own misconception, but you have access to the whole story. My hope is that others will recognize themselves in my words and have the strength to do what is right for themselves and our shared planet.
