  • Mission
    • Good morning, it’s Jason here at Chartmetric with your 3-minute Data Dump where we upload charts, artists and playlists into your brain so you can stay up on the latest in the music data world.
  • Date
    • This is your Data Dump for Thursday March 21st 2019.
  • Charts
    • “Murder on my Mind”, a track from American rapper YNW Melly has been a mainstay on the recent YouTube Top Songs chart, which consists of 100 tracks that are updated every week.
    • The Florida-based rapper released the YouTube video in Aug 2018, and it currently stands at 148M views, with 12.8M of them occurring for the week of March 8th to the 14th. It sits in the #2 spot on the Top Songs chart.
    • This particular YouTube chart differentiates itself from the YouTube Top Music Video chart however, since tracks can also be uploaded by other users in what’s called user-generated content, or UGC. YouTube Content ID, the system that automatically detects audio, will then attribute any UGC views to the same track, which is why “Murder on my Mind” has 12.8M views on the Top Songs chart, and only 8.2M on the Music Video chart.
    • Last month, news broke that Melly was arrested for murder charges in Miramar, Florida, which likely was a major factor in keeping the track popular in YouTube views, given its suggestive title and subject matter. “Murder on my Mind” continues a 29-week run on the Top Songs chart, which thus far peaked on February 20th.
  • Artist Highlight in the News
    • Yesterday on Instagram, Lollapalooza announced its 2019 lineup, which will take place in Chicago’s Grant Park on August 1st to the 4th.
    • On the official Lolla lineup poster, on 13th line down, is Queens-born, Brooklyn-based DJ/producer Yaeji, whose low-key banger “raingurl” is currently on 265 Spotify playlists and 59 Apple Music playlists.
    • She is featured on Spotify’s “Soultronic” playlist, which has 130K followers, as well as one of Apple Music’s premiere “A-List” playlists, entitled “The A-List: New Artists”.
    • Yaeji’s underground electronic sound has a smaller audience than some of her Lollapalooza peers, but it’s a loyal one: with 135K followers on Spotify, and 627K monthly listeners on the platform, that gives her a listeners to followers ratio of 4.6.
    • So while Lolla headliner Ariana Grande has a 2.0 ratio and fellow headliner Childish Gambino has a 2.5 ratio, Yaeji’s 4.6 suggests her smaller fanbase seems to keep coming back for more listens...and will probably get some Lollapalooza tickets to boot.
  • Playlist Round-Up
    • Who says rock is dead? Spotify’s premiere rock genre playlist entitled “Rock Classics” hangs strong as the 11th most followed playlist on the platform at 5.3M followers.
    • Over the past 28 days, it’s gained 164K followers (or 3%), recently passing up Hot Country in 12th place and hip-hop playlist Get Turnt in the 10th spot.
    • Rock Classics is a personalized playlist, so the song selections and positions may differ on your profile, but you can find tracks the in the ballpark of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, the Eagles’ “Hotel California” and home of one of the most iconic American guitar riffs, “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns and Roses.
    • The playlist tends to be energetic with the majority of the 150 tracks rating a 90 or higher in the 100-point Echo Nest Energy scale, so it should be good for parties and taking the car out for a spin.
    • It’s obviously a catalogue-focused playlist, so don’t think of pitching any new music here, but if you work with classic repertoire, this might be one to shoot for before they update, which usually happens on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
