For more than thirty-five years, author Michael Jan Friedman has built a successful career as a writer of more than 80 fiction and non-fiction franchise novelizations and expanded universe stories including Star Trek, Star Wars, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Predator, andAliens, some of which have appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list. Moreover, Friedman has written more than 150 comic books, mostly for DC Comics, but also for Image Comics and Marvel Comics, respectively.
In 2019, Friedman created the genre-busting Empty Space graphic novel with Brazilian artist Caio Cacau. This bold epic is an exciting blend of the action, detective, horror, science-fiction, thriller, and western genres. Empty Space introduced Robinson Dark, an amnesiac hero finding his way through Friedman’s expansive world building. Now five years later, Friedman returns to his space adventure universe with Empty Space: Betrayal, a soon to be released full-length prose sequel funded through Kickstarter, taking us deeper into the mystery of Robinson Dark’s past and the world in which he tries to fit in.
Join the Mint Condition crew as we welcome Friedman back as one of our fan favorite guests. We discuss the inspiration for Robinson Dark as the protagonist, how Friedman conceived of the Empty Space universe, and how he considers his Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign as not only a platform to connect directly with his fans, but also an opportunity to offer valuable rewards for their support. Take a look behind the scenes at what will make Empty Space: Betrayal a worthy successor to its prequel and what continues to inspire the man who created it.
