In 2021, Texas experienced its third-highest recorded number of domestic violence fatalities. Today’s guests, Sarah Hilderbrand and Mikisha Hooper, were both instrumental in the production of the 2021 Honoring Texas Victims (HTV) Report which highlights key statistics relating to domestic violence and gives a human face to the victims by providing deep analyses of the cases. A few things become clear during this discussion; Texas is in the midst of a domestic violence epidemic, there is a strong correlation between firearm possession and domestic violence fatalities, and there are a few key strategies that, when implemented correctly, can lead to a drastic reduction in domestic violence homicides. This episode may be hard to listen to at times, but understanding the issue is the first step to solving this complex problem.
