An SH-60 Seahawk helicopter flying from the USS Monterey helped prevent a massive shipment of illicit weapons that were being transited through international waters in the North Arabian Sea.

The raid on a suspicious dhow by the US Fifth Fleet was made public by the US Navy through photos. It took place between May 6 and 7. It comes amid tensions in Yemen and Iran’s attempt to support the Houthi rebels. However, it may be linked to other militant groups in the Horn of Africa or Yemen or elsewhere.

The US says that it conducts maritime security operations that entail routine patrols. The US posted photos on May 8 showing “thousands of illicit weapons interdicted by guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) from a stateless dhow in international waters of the North Arabian Sea on May 6-7. Maritime security operations, as conducted by the US Fifth Fleet, entail routine patrols to determine pattern of life in the maritime as well as to enhance mariner-to-mariner relations. These operations reassure allies and partners and preserve freedom of navigation and free flow of commerce.”

The US Fifth Fleet tweeted that the cache of weapons “included advanced Russian-made anti-tank guided missiles & Chinese Type 56 assault rifles.”

Iran's Zarif says on US to revive nuclear deal

Iran's foreign minister said on Saturday that the United States had an obligation to help revive Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers which Washington had abandoned, after President Joe Biden said it was unclear how serious Tehran was about talks on the accord.

The United States has expressed its readiness to lift many of its sanctions on Iran at the Vienna nuclear talks but Tehran is demanding more, Iran's senior negotiator said on Friday.

Biden said he believed Iran was seriously engaging in the talks but it was unclear what Tehran was actually prepared to do to resume compliance with the deal. Asked if he thought Tehran was serious about talks, Biden replied: "Yes, but how serious, and what they are prepared to do is a different story."

US officials are holding indirect talks with Iran in Vienna on how to resume compliance with the deal, which former President Donald Trump abandoned in 2018.

"As we try to revive JCPOA (nuclear agreement) in Vienna, it's necessary to remember how it all started. 3 years ago today, a disgraced buffoon violated US obligations…," Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter.

"Today, @POTUS (Biden) has to decide whether US continues lawlessness or adheres to law. Onus is on US, not Iran," Zarif said.

Trump's withdrawal from the accord prompted Iran a year later to begin violating the terms of the agreement that aimed to rein in Tehran's nuclear ambitions in return for the lifting of sanctions. Tehran denies seeking nuclear weapons.

Does the US want a nuclear deal sooner than Iran? - analysis

Does Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei want to see the outcome of June's presidential election before agreeing to a new nuclear deal?

By YONAH JEREMY BOB

MAY 8, 2021 19:28

The signs were unmistakable, but they have only become more pronounced.

There may be an interim US-Iran deal to move toward returning to the nuclear deal before the May 21 and June 18 deadlines – but if there is not, it will be because the Islamic Republic wants to move slower than America.

May 21 is when the temporary three-month deal between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) lapses. It gave international inspectors most of the access they needed to Iranian nuclear sites despite the ayatollahs’ anger that the Biden administration had not yet removed sanctions.

June 18 is when Iran is due to hold elections, where many predict the “hardliners” will wrest the presidency from the “pragmatists.”

While for Israeli purposes there may not be a huge difference between the two Iranian camps, the pragmatists – substantively for US and EU purposes – are, at least, willing to talk and make deals.

The conventional wisdom after four rounds of US-Iran-world powers negotiations over recent months is that all sides were pushing hard for a deal before these deadlines.

This could help the pragmatists, currently in power, to maintain their hold on the presidency – something the US and the EU definitely prefer.

But Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may have other plans.

After a recent round of talks, Russia and China sent out very positive messages, the US was lukewarm-positive, and Iran President Hassan Rouhani said that up to 70% of the issues were already agreed upon and that a new era of détente might just be over the horizon.

But Rouhani is not the real decider in Tehran: Khamenei is.

In a briefing to reporters, a top US negotiator with Iran repeatedly said that all the issues have been fleshed out and that the only real question now is whether Iran actually wants a deal in the coming weeks.

But what if Khamenei doesn’t?

What if he prefers a deal after the election so that the hardliners whom he prefers can claim victory?

Perhaps he wants to rob the pragmatists of a big victory point going into the June 18 election.

Of course, there are still two weeks before May 21 – and since that was an artificial deadline, there are still five weeks to the June 18 deadline.

There still may be a deal before then, and these weeks may see the Islamic Republic playing chicken until the last moment to make sure it can squeeze the most out of the US. That certainly was the pattern for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) negotiations.

But perhaps Khamenei never wanted to cut a deal until after elections at all.

Maybe all of this was just to feel out Biden’s team so that after the Supreme Leader’s favored hardliners win the presidency, he will know how and when to cut the deal.

It is also possible that there may be no deal and that Khamenei was negotiating to change the narrative, weaken Western resistance to Iran’s violations and use the lack of a deal to blame more things on Rouhani and his pragmatists.

In any case, Washington has made it clear it is ready for a deal by May 21. The only question now, is what Khamenei wants.

Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah join to incite terror against Israel - analysis

The tensions in Jerusalem go back to late April when Ramadan began and Israeli police restricted access to Damascus Gate.

By SETH J. FRANTZMAN

MAY 8, 2021 20:05

Iran is using tensions over Jerusalem as an excuse to lead other extremist groups in the region to push for terror attacks against Israel.

It is important to understand the timeline here. The tensions in Jerusalem go back to late April, when Ramadan began, Israeli police restricted access to Damascus Gate and a series of TikTok videos showed Arabs attacking religious Jews. There have also been tensions in Sheikh Jarrah in Jerusalem, protests that escalated in early May.

On April 22, dozens were wounded in Jerusalem after a far-right Jewish group clashes with Muslims at Damascus Gate. Hamas in Gaza said Jerusalem and al-Aqsa Mosque were being threatened, and warned that the “gates of hell” could open, a reference to war with Israel.

Fast forward to Friday, before the clashes on Temple Mount. In preparation for “Quds Day” – a day that Iran and its allies in the region highlight as a way to centralize focus on Jerusalem and increase incitement against Israel – a series of statements were made.

Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wrote that “the Palestinians’ endeavors and the pure blood of resistance martyrs have managed to multiply Palestinian Jihad’s internal power by hundreds of times. Once, Palestinian youth defended themselves by throwing stones, but today they respond to the enemy’s attacks with precision missiles.”

This coincided with Hamas warning that Israel was going to “sabotage al-Aqsa.” The Iranian leader also said that “on the issue of Palestine, all Muslim states and nations are responsible, but the Palestinians themselves are the axis of Jihad.”

From Gaza to Tehran, the insinuation was clear: A coordinated message inflaming tensions around Jerusalem, weaving together conspiracies and calling for violence. There was less mention of Sheikh Jarrah in the statements, making it clear that current protest was not necessarily a central issue.

At the same time, Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah gave a long speech slamming Israel. He said the recent stampede at Mount Meron, where 45 people were killed, demonstrated Israel’s “lack of preparation to confront war.” His point was that Israel is not ready for mass casualties. “Now, the Israelis are also fearful of a security conflagration with the Palestinians,” he said.

David Daoud, an expert on Hezbollah, transcribed most of his speech online. “Regarding the IDF – I won’t say the IDF is weak, but it’s not as strong as [Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Aviv] Kohavi would have us believe,” Nasrallah claimed.

The statements by Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are not isolated. They occurred as a coordinated message, and the message was not just about Quds Day. They were preparing the ground for further violence. Hamas flags were being brought to demonstrations in Jerusalem at the same time as the statements.

This is also a Hamas ploy for power in Jerusalem, a city it has had a foothold in but in where it has had difficulty raising its head. It is a Hamas ploy for power in the West Bank after the Palestinian Authority postponed elections.

It is also a way for Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas to appear relevant. They also want to drive a wedge between Israel and its new peace partners in the Gulf, knowing that the violence in Jerusalem will pressure Bahrain, the UAE and others to make statements.

Similarly, they want to inflame tensions in Jordan. They know that Saudi Arabia has sought to tone down tensions with Iran and has been discussing rapprochement with Iran in Iraq, and with Turkey and Syria.

For Iran, this is a perfect opportunity to push tensions with Israel using the Jerusalem issue. Iran knows that on other fronts, whether nuclear weapons or entrenchment in Syria, it faces hurdles. However, it has long sought to play an increasing role in Palestinian affairs.

Iran’s media is pushing the line that Israel is in decline. The IRGC has made statements about how Israel’s “security bubble” has been burst.

Iran’s Press TV now highlights Nasrallah and how other Muslim countries are condemning Israel. Hamas, on Saturday warned Israel not to “play with fire.” He has singled out Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in this statement, not noting the current political turmoil in Israel after Israel’s elections.

On Saturday afternoon, thousands of Palestinians were reportedly trying to make their way to Jerusalem as part of the protests and their desire to “defend” Al-Aqsa. The bubbling crisis could now affect Israeli relations with the Gulf and may also spark the interest of Washington and Europe.

Sensing victory, Jerusalem 'shabab' turn Sheikh Jarrah into major crisis

The Palestinians have also succeeded in making the Sheikh Jarrah dispute appear as being part of an overall Israeli scheme to drive Arabs out of Jerusalem and “Judaize” the city.

The Palestinians have succeeded in turning the dispute over the ownership of a number of houses in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah into a major crisis that has now caught the attention of the United Nations, the European Union and the US administration, as well as several countries and local and foreign media organizations.

This success came on the heels of another “victory” proclaimed by the Palestinians two weeks ago, when Jerusalem police, responding to daily demonstrations, removed barricades it had placed outside the entrance of the Old City’s Damascus Gate.

The barricades, intended to prevent hundreds of youths from gathering at night at the gate entrance, were reinstalled two days later because the nightly skirmishes between the protesters and the police continued even after their removal.

Palestinians praised the removal of the barricades as a “big victory” and bragged about how the “shabab (youths) of Jerusalem” had forced Israel to capitulate and this perceived capitulation is seen as a sign of weakness that is further emboldening the “shabab.”

Leaders of the Palestinian Authority, Hamas and other Palestinian factions were also quick to heap praise on the “heroic” east Jerusalem youths who forced Israeli authorities to remove the barricades. They further lauded the youths for “thwarting attempts by Jewish settlers to storm al-Aqsa Mosque and the homes of residents” of east Jerusalem.

To maintain the momentum, the Palestinians decided to focus on al-Aqsa Mosque compound on the Temple Mount and Sheikh Jarrah, where a number of Arab families face eviction from houses that were owned by Jews before 1948.

The violence that erupted in Sheikh Jarrah in the past few days and al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Friday, when hundreds of rioters threw rocks and other objects at policemen, has succeeded in creating a link between the dispute over the Sheikh Jarrah houses and Islam’s third holiest site.

The Palestinians have also succeeded in making the Sheikh Jarrah dispute appear as if it is part of an overall Israeli scheme to drive Arabs from Jerusalem and “Judaize” the city.

The Jewish organizations claiming ownership of the houses may have won the legal battle, but it’s now hard to see how the Israeli authorities will be able to implement any court order, given the outcry by many international parties and condemnations by several countries, including Arab states.

In 2017, the Palestinians celebrated another “victory” in Jerusalem when Israel was forced, after weeks of protests and clashes, to remove the metal detector gates installed by police at the entrances to al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Some Palestinians also refer to Israel’s failure to evacuate the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, located alongside the Jerusalem-Jericho highway, as yet another achievement in the arm-twisting battle with Israel.

Since then, the Palestinians have vowed to pursue their efforts to prevent Israel from “changing the historical and legal status of al-Aqsa Mosque compound” and stop it from implementing its alleged plan to “Judaize” Jerusalem.

Now the “shabab” of Jerusalem, who in the past few days were chanting slogans in support of Hamas, are convinced that if they keep up the pressure, Israel will have no choice but to refrain from evicting the Arab families from Sheikh Jarrah.

Finally, the events of the past few weeks have shown that Hamas has many supporters in east Jerusalem, much to the dismay of the PA leadership. During some of the protests, demonstrators raised Hamas flags and chanted slogans denouncing PA President Mahmoud Abbas as a “traitor” and a “US agent.”

Fatah warns Israel of ‘all-out conflict’ over Jerusalem

The central committee of Fatah, the movement led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, warns of a broader conflict with Israel amid escalating tensions in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In a statement, the committee calls for a “continuation of the public uprising and fight against the occupation and the settlers.”

“The continuation of the settler attacks on the holy places and the homes of Palestinian residents, their expulsion and expansion of settlements — will lead to an all-out conflict in all the Palestinian territories,” it adds.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, Fatah’s armed wing, also puts out a statement threatening Israel.

“We will not abandon our holy places. We will be as one hand in our response to the enemy,” it says.

Sanders, Warren, AOC slam Israel over ‘inhumane’ pending evictions in Sheikh Jarrah

Several prominent progressive US lawmakers condemn Israel over the pending evictions of several Palestinian families in Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, whose homes are claimed by nationalist Jews as part of a long-running legal battle.

“The United States must speak out strongly against the violence by government-allied Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and make clear that the evictions of Palestinian families must not go forward,” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders writes in a tweet, seemingly referring to far-right MK Itamar Ben Gvir.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a Massachusetts Democrat, denounces the evictions as “abhorrent and unacceptable.”

“The Administration should make clear to the Israeli government that these evictions are illegal and must stop immediately,” she says.

New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also slams Israel over the “inhumane” evictions, tweeting: “Israeli forces are forcing families from their homes during Ramadan and inflicting violence.”

Palestinian demonstrators also light a trash can on fire on Salah al-Din Street near the Damascus Gate as clashes with police intensify.

By AARON BOXERMAN

The Waqf reports more than 90,000 Palestinians attended Laylat al-Qadr prayers on the Temple Mount.

The number is substantially less than a normal year, as Israel limited the number of Palestinians who could enter due to a wave of COVID-19 transmission in the West Bank and Gaza.
