United Airlines, Delta Airlines , and American Airlines have canceled flights between the United States and Tel Aviv, according to data by flight tracker FlightAware, amid an escalating conflict in Israel.
Israel said it killed 16 members of the Hamas armed wing in Gaza in a barrage on Wednesday and Palestinian militants rained rockets into Israel in one of their most intense hostilities in years.
United Airlines said it had canceled flights from Chicago and Newark to Tel Aviv on May 11 and flights from San Francisco and Newark on May 12.
"We have issued a travel waiver to allow customers to adjust their travel through May 25 and will continue to monitor the situation," a United spokeswoman said.
A spokesman for Delta, which flies to Tel Aviv from New York's John F. Kennedy International (JFK) airport, said it has issued a travel wavier for flights between May 11 and 13 and has "no determination about resumption at this juncture."
American Airlines, which also flies to Tel Aviv from JFK, did not immediately comment.
El Al Israel Airlines said earlier on Wednesday it stood ready to operate extra flights as required "to keep Israel's skies open." This could include special flights to repatriate Israelis stranded "in locations from which it is not possible to return home," it said in a statement.
Israel on Monday briefly halted takeoffs from its main Ben Gurion Airport and diverted incoming flights after a Hamas rocket barrage on the Tel Aviv area. The country has a smaller airport in the south, called Ramon, designed to serve as a stop-gap should wartime threats force longer closures of Ben Gurion.
Since last Monday, some 1,000 rockets have been fired into Israel, as terrorist groups in the Gaza Strip and the IDF clash amid tensions over Jerusalem.
Rockets from Gaza have killed six Israelis, including a father and a daughter when one rocket made a direct impact in Lod.
Another casualty was Omer Tabib, an IDF soldier who was set to be released next month.

Hamas uses 'A-120' rocket, named for slain commander, to fire at Jerusalem

Hamas used a new rocket in its attack against Jerusalem on Monday called the A-120 and named for a commander killed by the IDF during the Gaza War of 2014.
The "A-120" is said to have a range of about 120 kilometers and was seen in footage shared by Hamas of a long rocket being loaded by masked terrorists into a launcher in the Gaza Strip. Seven rockets were fired toward Jerusalem on Monday, one of which hit a home in a nearby suburb, causing damage but no injuries.
The rocket is strikingly similar to the R-160 which Hamas boasted as its longest-range domestically-made rocket, first fired in the 2014 war, at one point hitting as far north as near Haifa.
The "R" referred to a former top Hamas commander, Abdel-Aziz Rantisi, who was killed in an Israeli targeted killing in 2004.
The A-120 is said to be named for Ra'ed Al-Attar, who was the commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade in southern Gaza and a member of the terror group’s military council. His command was viewed as important due to Rafah’s proximity to the border with Egypt and being the home to smuggling tunnels into Gaza.
Congressional reports claim that Attar authorized the August 2010 firing of Grad-style rockets from the Sinai Peninsula into Eilat and Aqaba, Jordan.
Israel claimed that Attar was also responsible for the murder and abduction of IDF Lt. Hadar Goldin during Operation Protective Edge in 2014, and that the Rafah brigade under his command was involved in other incidents during the campaign in which IDF soldiers were wounded.
In 1994, Attar was involved in a shooting which killed an Israeli soldier along the Egyptian border. In 2002, he planned a deadly attack on an Israeli military post near Kerem Shalom in which four IDF soldiers of the Bedouin desert patrol unit were killed.

Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit on Wednesday took a sideswipe at Public Security Minister Amir Ohana and other public officials on both sides of the political spectrum for statements, which could weaken law enforcement.
Earlier, Ohana tweeted that the police had made a mistake in arresting certain armed Jews, whom he said were acting in self-defense, and multiplied the power of the police to maintain order.
Ohana was responding to the mainly Arab-initiated violence in Lod and some other areas within Israel, along with some anti-Arab violence from Jews as well.
Without mentioning Ohana by name, Mandelblit clarified that the police will arrest those who commit violence from either the Arab or Jewish sectors and that public officials should act to reduce, not increase, incitement and respect for law enforcement.
Mandelblit issued the statement following questions from The Jerusalem Post and other media about Ohana’s statement.
In addition, the attorney-general said that he and IDF Military Advocate General Maj.-Gen. Sharon Afek had approved the temporary use of the IDF as part of an emergency lockdown to regain control of law and order in Lod.
According to Mandelblit, Police Chief Kobi Shabtai declined that offer, but accepted an offer of using border police units to assist with Lod, though usually, those units deal only with the PA and crossings with other foreign countries.
The attorney-general said that use of the IDF or border police for emergency situations was permitted under the law for a temporary emergency period, though not for an extended peacetime period.

Jewish-Arab violence and riots erupted across the country on Wednesday amid the ongoing fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
A Jewish citizen in his 30s was in critical condition after he was attacked by a mob of Arab demonstrators near Egged Square in the city of Acre. Police said he was attacked in his car by Arab Israeli protesters armed with sticks and stones.
Magen David Adom staff evacuated him to the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya unconscious, in serious condition and suffering from a head injury.
Senior MDA medic, Firas Reis, said that "We were near the area when we saw the wounded man lying unconscious and suffering from a bleeding head injury. We immediately began life-saving medical treatment that included bandaging and breath support and evacuated him in stable condition for further treatment at the hospital."
In another incident, in the Tel Aviv suburb of Bat Yam, Jewish extremists marched down main streets, smashing Arab-owned businesses and attacking passersby. One motorcyclist - identified as an Arab - was grabbed in the middle of the street and beaten on live television. Four of the alleged attackers were arrested while chanting "death to Arabs" and "may your village burn."
Independent journalist Aviya Schatz reportedly warned police beforehand of the expected riot, which was seemingly organized on WhatsApp groups.
"We warned of threats of death and violence, we sent them to all media channels and filed a police complaint. Didn't help. They're in the streets," Schatz wrote in a tweet, accompanied by a video of rioters.

Bat Yam Mayor Tzvika Brot said of the riots that "The acts were organized by provocateurs who came from outside the city. This is not our way."
Kan News reported that a Jewish man in his 30s was lynched by protesters who mistook him for an Arab. He was evacuated to the hospital and his condition is classified as serious, but stable.
Sephardi Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, one of Israel's two chief rabbis, appealed for restraint in response to the violence, saying "We must not be dragged into provocations and inflicting harm on people or property."
"The Torah of Israel grants no license for taking the law into one's hands and acting violently," he added.
In Haifa, a 26-year-old man was injured after being run over by a car near the demonstrations in the city. He was evacuated to Rambam Medical Center in the city in light-to-moderate condition. The 20-year-old driver fled the scene, but was apprehended and detained by police.
On Hagiborim Street in Haifa, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a police car, setting fire to the vehicle. No injuries were reported.
Right wing extremist rioters were also seen in Tiberias and Lod, and more are expected to show up in other cities with a largely mixed Arab and Jewish population.
The Tiberias municipality released a statement condemning the riots, saying that "We ask everyone to stop the practice of unnecessary demonstrations that do not contribute anything. These demonstrations can cause unnecessary harm to people and even be life threatening."
"It's time to calm down and help the people of the south as much as possible," the statement added.
Due to the severe violence seen in Lod on Monday and Tuesday, the Border Police established a task force headquarters in the city on Wednesday, with a force of some 500 Border Police personnel, including tactical border police, detectives, investigators and other law enforcement personnel.
Posts on social media by settler activists stated that at least 30 Jewish youths from the Yitzhar region in the Samaria district of the West Bank traveled to Lod on Tuesday night and engaged in clashes with Arab rioters.

Clashes broke out on the Temple Mount on Wednesday morning, after a night of violent clashes between Palestinians and Arab-Israelis and Israeli security forces throughout the West Bank and Israel, as well as barrages of rockets from Gaza.
Israel Police announced that as thousands of worshippers arrived at the Temple Mount on Wednesday morning, hundreds of people who had masked their faces began causing unrest, throwing stones and objects at police officers at the site. Police arrested seven suspects in the clashes and restored quiet to the compound.
Pictures from the compound early on Wednesday morning showed Palestinians preparing stones to throw at security forces.
Additionally on Wednesday morning, a Palestinian was killed by Israeli security forces in the village of Aqraba, located south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, according to Palestinian reports.
In Jenin, a firefight broke out between Palestinians and Israeli security forces. No injuries were reported.
Overnight Tuesday, one Palestinian was killed and another four were injured in the al-Fawwar refugee camp south of Hebron in the West Bank. He was identified as 26-year-old Hussein Al-Titi by Palestinian media, which claimed that Israeli security forces had held up the ambulance carrying him, leading to his death.
The clashes came as violent riots swept Israel and the West Bank and

Gaza escalation undermines formation of Bennett-Lapid coalition

The efforts by Yamina leader Naftali Bennett and Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid to form a government remained on hold on Tuesday due to the escalation of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip aimed at Israeli civilians.
The official coalition negotiations at Ramat Gan’s Kfar Maccabiah Hotel were canceled, but talks to resolve remaining differences continued by phone and under the radar.
Completing the task of forming a government by the end of the week, which appeared possible on Monday morning, is no longer an option. The earliest possible date to swear in a new government is now next Tuesday, after Shavuot,. But if the violence continues, it could end up being closer to the end of Lapid’s mandate on June 2.
It was already known that the formation of a government was put in jeopardy by Ra’am (United Arab List) chairman Mansour Abbas’s freezing talks until the security situation subsides.
The Jerusalem Post learned exclusively on Tuesday that there was one more complication in building a government caused by the escalation: Bennett intends to appoint Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi to a senior ministerial post.
Davidi ran for Knesset with Yamina as its No. 3 candidate. But he quit the day before the Knesset was sworn in.
He said he resigned to remain mayor of Sderot. But there was speculation the real reason was that he opposed Bennett forming a government with centrist and left-wing parties instead of only the Right.
In interviews on prime-time news broadcasts, Davidi made an effort to sidestep any questions about Bennett and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Aside from Bennett serving as prime minister, Yamina is set to be given three portfolios: Interior for MK Ayelet Shaked, Religious Services for MK Matan Kahana and apparently the Construction portfolio for Davidi.
But if Davidi rejects the post, Bennett could end up honoring his commitment to appoint the head of the Bayit Yehudi Party, Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Hagit Moshe, as a minister. Bennett promised her a portfolio when she agreed to endorse his list instead of the Religious Zionist Party, where she was set to be a Knesset candidate.
Another option is to give the additional portfolio to MK Abir Kara, in which case it would have to be a socioeconomic-related ministry. Kara made a name for himself as the leader of the Ani Shulman movement that championed the rights of independent workers and small-business owners.

With fierce rioting continuing throughout Tuesday night in the mixed Jewish-Arab city of Lod, a state of emergency was declared, with Defense Minister Benny Gantz announcing the deployment of several Border Police units to help quell the violence that saw the burning of three synagogues and dozens of cars.
At least two people were in serious condition from the clashes, one from rocks. In Acco, another mixed Arab-Jewish city in northern Israel, an 84-year-old man was seriously hurt when a restaurant was set on fire by rioters. Some 25 residents of Ramla and Lod were arrested on Tuesday night, according to a police spokesperson, and 151 were arrested in total within the central-northern district of Israel.
"We have lost control of the city and the streets," Lod Mayor Yair Revivo lamented to Israel's Channel 12 News. Garbage bins, knocked over and set ablaze, could be seen nearby.

Israel Police Chief Kobi Shabtai commented on the violence seen in Lod late Tuesday night: "We have not seen this kind of violence since October 2000," he said, in reference to Arab riots that took place at the beginning of what would later become the Second Intifada. Shabtai said that he was moving his office to Lod until the anarchy there settled down.
Uri Buri, a popular Jewish-owned fish restaurant in the mixed coastal city of Acre, had been set ablaze. Footage aired by Channel 12 showed the restaurant's exterior blacked and burned, and its windows smashed.
In Jaffa, near Tel Aviv, Arab protesters clashed with police, who fired stun grenades to disperse them.
In Arab cities across Israel and the Palestinian territories, police arrested 21 rioters participating in violent demonstrations.
Fires engulfed the areas in and around Wadi Ara, Jisr az-Zarqa and Um al Fahm, as Israeli police attempted to maintain order, shooting rubber bullets and stun grenades as they were pelted with rocks and Molotov cocktails.

Violence breaks out in Arab towns across the country
The detained were brought in on the suspicion of throwing stones, setting off fireworks, burning trash cans and tires as well as assaulting police officers.
In the North, full-scale riots took place in the town of Majd al-Krum.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed security forces to respond harshly to those who violently protest and threaten public security.
"We will not tolerate this; we need to restore calm," Netanyahu said during a Wednesday pre-dawn visit to Lod. "If this isn't an emergency situation, I don't know what is. We are talking about life and death here."
When asked by reporters whether police activity in Jerusalem may have led to the unrest in Lod, Netanyahu shut the assumption down: "These events have no excuse; this is fundamental hate."
Gantz indicated that as defense minister, he will provide all the necessary means to security forces in order to restore calm, including the power to enforce a lockdown.
Revivo, the mayor, warned of deaths if the violent riots continue. "People might die tonight if the government doesn't put Lod into a lockdown within the next hour," he warned. The Lod Municipality has helped evacuate residents who felt that their safety and security were at risk.
"We've gotten to a place where we have to treat criminals harshly, cool things down and maintain social order," Gantz said.
During the course of the violent riots throughout the city, the Maoz Yeshiva in the mixed Jewish-Arab Ramat Eshkol neighborhood was firebombed, causing massive damage to one classroom and lesser damage to another, as well as superficial damage to the façade of the building. In addition, a synagogue was set on fire, as well as numerous cars belonging to Jewish residents.
Firefighters also managed to successfully put out a massive fire in a tire shop, as well as fires in several residential buildings. Footage obtained by The Jerusalem Post showed private streets in some of the quieter neighborhoods of Lod with cars set aflame in the middle of Tuesday night.
Initial escalations began as hundreds of Arab residents protested in Lod on Monday night in solidarity with Palestinians in east Jerusalem and Gaza by throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails around while marching toward the Jewish neighborhood of Ramat Eskhol.
Israel police in the Ramle-Lod region reported that 16 protesters were arrested on Monday evening during riots in which around 200 Arab youth arrived to protest in solidarity with Palestinians in east Jerusalem. Many were seen throwing stones and bottles and launching fireworks at police and buildings, while also burning trash cans and tires.
Musa Malakh Hassuna, a 33-year-old Lod resident and father of three, was shot dead during the riots on Hahashmonaim Street in Lod. Two more people were moderately injured in the incident, including a 20-year-old man.
Violence continued on Tuesday night following the funeral of Hassuna, with rioters clashing with police, throwing rocks and rubble and once again setting fires.
The riots took place over the backdrop of the Sheikh Jarrah conflict in east Jerusalem, in which a neighborhood populated by Arab residents is under proprietary dispute, pending a decision by the High Court of Justice. The ongoing conflict has led to protests throughout Israel.
"The danger that Lod faces, and the damage that it can do, is harsher than hundreds of rockets being hurled towards Israel," Revivo said.

IDF spokesman says military has ‘not ruled out’ ground operation
By STUART WINER
The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson says the military has not ruled out a ground operation, saying it seemed likely that the fighting could go on for a number of days.
“We have a foot on the gas [pedal],” IDF spokesman Hidai Zilberman tells Army Radio.
Zilberman says it is unclear how long the fighting would last, but a matter of “days” seemed a likely estimate.
He says IDF strikes in Gaza so far have been “significant.”
“Hamas,” he says, “is the only address in Gaza.”

The army already has a plan for operations to continue until Wednesday morning and after that will assess the situation, he says.
Asked if a ground operation could happen, Zilberman says the military has “not ruled out anything” and notes that “alert notifications have been sent to those who need to get them” possibly indicating that the IDF is calling up reservists.
