Biden: No peace until region recognizes Israel's right to exist

"There is no shift in my commitment to the security of Israel. No shift. Period. What we still need is a two-state solution. It is the only answer," he said.

Regional recognition of Israel as a Jewish state and a two-state solution are the ways to peace, US President Joe Biden said on Friday.

“Until the region says, unequivocally, they acknowledge the right of Israel to exist as an independent Jewish state, there will be no peace,” the president said.

In addition, Biden said: “We still need a two-state solution. It is the only answer.”

Asked at a White House press conference if there has been a change in the Democratic Party’s position on Israel, Biden said: “There is no shift in my commitment… to the security of Israel, period. No shift. Not at all… I think that, you know, my party still supports Israel.”

Biden said that he urged Israel to stop the “inter-communal fighting that has extremes on both sides” in Jerusalem and to ensure that Arab and Jewish Israelis are “treated equally as Israeli citizens.”

The US is going to “provide for security in the West Bank,” along with its renewed economic assistance to the Palestinian Authority, he said, and it will work with other countries to rebuild homes in Gaza without allowing the funds to get to Hamas.

Biden said it is “essential” for PA President Mahmoud Abbas be recognized as the rightful leader of the Palestinians, as opposed to Hamas, which he pointed out is a terrorist organization.

Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke six times over the course of Operation Guardian of the Walls, but Biden would not divulge what was said.

“One of the reasons why we were able to get the ceasefire in 11 days, they didn’t do what other people have done: I don’t talk about what I tell people in private. I don’t talk about what we negotiate in private,” the president said.

However, Biden said he trusts Netanyahu to make the effort to maintain the truce.

“I take Bibi Netanyahu – when he gives me his word, I take him at his word. He’s never broken his word to me,” Biden stated. “The prime minister knows my views… From the very beginning, I told him what our objective was: that there needed to be a ceasefire. And he, in fact, kept his commitment in the time frame in which he said he would do it. Thank you.”

Biden also praised his “great team” that worked with him on urging a cessation of hostilities, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken – who is set to visit the region this week – and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who were in frequent contact with their counterparts in Israel, Egypt, Jordan and beyond during the 11 days of fighting.

In addition, Biden remarked on the “commendable job” Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi did in getting Hamas to commit to hold fire.

In a press conference on Friday, Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz thanked the US for its support for Israel.

“My good friend Biden and I spoke six times in recent days – all the conversations were friendly and warm,” Netanyahu said. “He repeated that the US supports Israel’s right to defend itself… I thank him for his cooperation in manufacturing Iron Dome missiles.”

UAE, Jordan ready to facilitate Israel-Palestinian peace efforts

The United Arab Emirates stands ready to facilitate peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians, the de facto ruler of the Gulf state said in remarks carried on state media on Sunday.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan made the comments in a telephone call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, whose country, with US support, brokered a ceasefire on Friday that ended the fiercest fighting in years between Israel and Islamist militant group Hamas.

The UAE, which last year normalized ties with Israel, "is ready to work with all parties to maintain the ceasefire and explore new paths to reduce escalation and achieve peace," state news agency WAM cited Sheikh Mohammed as saying.

The Crown Prince stressed however the need for "additional efforts, especially by Israeli and Palestinian leaders."

Last year's normalization deals signed by the UAE and Bahrain, followed by Sudan and Morocco, were denounced by the Palestinians as abandoning a unified position under which Arab states would make peace only under a two-state solution, negotiations for which have been deadlocked for years.

The UAE, which distrusts political Islamist groups like Hamas, has said the "Abraham Accords" would ultimately benefit the Palestinians.

UAE ambassador to Washington Yousef al-Otaiba said last month that the establishment of formal channels under the accords would allow the Gulf state to play a similar diplomatic role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Egypt and Jordan, which have peace deals with Israel.

Egypt and Qatar, which has ties with Hamas, led regional efforts for the ceasefire that ended 11 days of fighting in which aerial bombardment of Gaza killed 232 Palestinians and rocket attacks killed 12 people in Israel.

Jordan's King Abdullah stressed on Sunday the importance of translating the Gaza ceasefire into an extended truce, and said there is no alternative to a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. King Abdullah called for "stepping up Arab and international efforts to translate the ceasefire into an extended truce to push for a political solution that fulfills the legitimate rights of Palestinians," the royal court wrote on Twitter.

Egypt and Qatar, which has ties with Hamas, led regional efforts for the ceasefire that ended 11 days of fighting in which aerial bombardment of Gaza killed 232 Palestinians and rocket attacks killed 12 people in Israel.

King Abdullah said Jordan "puts all its diplomatic relations and capabilities at the service of the Palestinian cause," state news agency Petra reported.

The king also said "there is no alternative to a two-state solution to achieve just and comprehensive peace," Petra added.

UN gears up for Gaza funding drive as EU chief balks at paying to rebuild

"The EU cannot be expected to finance yet again the re-building of Gaza without a meaningful prospect of actually solving the underlying conflict."

The United Nations plans to launch a major funding drive to rebuild Gaza in the aftermath of the 2021 war with Israel, just as the European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrrell wrote about his frustration about continually paying for the cost of the IDF-Hamas conflict.

"The EU cannot be expected to finance yet again the re-building of Gaza without a meaningful prospect of actually solving the underlying conflict," Borrell wrote in a blog he posted over the weekend. Although his statement did not have the consensus of the 27-member states, it does reflect the sentiment of some of them.

He spoke out as top UN officials — Humanitarian Coordinator for the Palestinian territories Lynn Hasting and UN Relief and Works Agency Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini — visited Gaza over the weekend.

They surveyed the civilian damage done during the 11-day IDF operation to target Hamas terror infrastructure, known as Guardian of the Walls which began in response to Hamas rocket attacks against Israeli civilians on May 10 and ended early Friday morning.

t is the fourth Gaza since Operation Cast Lead in December 2008 and January 2009. Two other additional wars, one in 2012 dubbed Pillar of Defense and one in 2014, known as Operation Protective Edge.

The 2014 war, which included aerial bombardments and ground campaign inside Gaza, destroyed or severely damaged 18,000 homes, displacing 100,000, according to the UN Office for the .

As of the start of the 2021 war, homes had been provided for all but 660 families, approximately 3,700 people, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council.

Some "258 buildings, comprising 1,042 housing and commercial units, had been destroyed" as of Thursday, according to an initial estimate by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. It also estimated that 769 housing units "had been severely damaged, and rendered uninhabitable.: It added that "an additional 14,536 units suffered minor damage." Those estimates are likely to rise once a full assessment is completed.

Hastings said that, "In the coming days, we will launch an inter-agency financial appeal to support our efforts to address new humanitarian needs." In the interim, she said, "the humanitarian community is working hard to bring in essential items, including food, medicine and fuel."

Already, even in advance of the a funding drive, the UN plans to release $22 million for immediate needs such as healthcare and water, Hastings said. Last week UNRWA launched a flash $38 million appeal for funding.

Hastings listed issues she found in Gaza outside of housing such as damage to health care facilities, including a COVIDD-19 testing lab and a health care center that treated pandemic victims.

"An agricultural supplies warehouse was destroyed – and with it likely at least one season of crops, threatening food security – creating a health and environmental hazard," Hastings said.

Both she and Lazzarini also visited some of the victims of the IDF bombings.

"I met with several families that have been deeply affected by the latest round of hostilities. A father who lost his wife and four of his five children. I witnessed the despair of displaced families whose homes have been completely destroyed," Hastings said.

After visiting a damaged school, she tweeted, "Damage in a classroom of one of the 48 schools hit last week in Gaza. It can be repaired but really issue is long term trauma. One father told me his son asked him if it hurts to die."

As of Thursday, according to OCHA, some 242 Palestinians, including 66 children, had been killed in Gaza, as result of the war., of which at least 129 were civilians. Most of those deaths, OCHA said, appeared to be from IDF fire, but some were from Palestinian rockets that fell short.

It added that at least "14 families in Gaza have lost three or more family members in the same incident," OCHA said.

Lazzarini said that “19 of the 60 children killed in this conflict went to UNRWA schools, they were known to my colleagues.” He added that, "every morning during the eleven-day conflict our colleagues went to work without knowing whether they would come back to their families.”

Gantz: Can’t guarantee some of the aid to rebuild Gaza won’t go to Hamas

Israel supports efforts to rebuild Gaza, even though some percentage of the aid will likely go to Hamas terrorists, Defense Minister Benny Gantz said in a briefing on Sunday.

Gantz said that dual-use products, which can be used for construction but also for terrorism, must be closely supervised.

“I’m not naïve; some of the materials we let in will go to Hamas,” Gantz said in a briefing. “In the end, it’s complicated. You need cement to build, and some of it goes to the terror tunnels.”

While in the past, the IDF and Shin Bet worked to stop weapons smuggling into Gaza, in recent years, Hamas as moved to manufacturing its own arms, the defense minister said.

“The more we work with the Egyptians, the less their ability will be to manufacture [weapons]. We also took out [Hamas’s] top two layers of research and development, and I hope that will have an influence,” Gantz said.

His remarks came two days after US President Joe Biden said that his country would help rebuild Gaza without allowing aid to get to Hamas. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to visit the region on Wednesday and Thursday, and Israeli officials said that the matter would likely come up in his meetings in Jerusalem.

Gantz said Israel plans to work with the US, EU and others on rebuilding Gaza, and the defense ministry is working on coming up with a better system to supervise the transfer of donor funds into the coastal enclave. He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the matter on Monday.

The defense minister said he is in favor of reviving the Gaza Reconstruction Mechanism (GRM) created by Israel, the Palestinian Authority and the UN after Operation Protective Edge in 2014, which allowed for millions of tons of construction material into the Gaza Strip under Israeli supervision to prevent the aid from being stolen by Hamas. The UN is the facilitator of international humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

When asked why things would be different now, if the GRM didn’t stop Hamas from stealing cement and other products to build tunnels and manufacture arms over the past seven years, Gantz responded: “That’s why we took out their factories, the R&D people and their ability to develop and manufacture.”

Blinken called to support the reconstruction and development of Gaza in televised interviews on Sunday.

"Our focus right now relentlessly is on dealing with the humanitarian situation, starting to do reconstruction and rebuild, and engage intensely with everyone, with Palestinians, with Israelis, with partners in the region," Blinken said on CNN.

The Biden administration would ensure aid does not go to Hamas by working with "trusted, independent parties that can help do the reconstruction and the development, not some quasi-governmental authority."

Hamas, he added, "has brought nothing but ruin to the Palestinian people: its gross mismanagement of Gaza while it’s been in charge, and of course, these indiscriminate rocket attacks on Israeli civilians, which have elicited the response that they did because Israel has a right to defend itself."

Gantz also said that Israeli civilian captives – Abera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed – and missing soldiers – Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul – would have to be returned before Gaza can be rebuilt.

“I separate basic humanitarian [aid] of food, medicines, water and electricity that we must let people have, from a higher level of humanitarian [aid] that must be conditioned on [returning] the captives and missing,” he said.

European Union's foreign policy chief Josep Borrrell wrote about his frustration about continually paying for the cost of the IDF-Hamas conflict.

"The EU cannot be expected to finance yet again the re-building of Gaza without a meaningful prospect of actually solving the underlying conflict," Borrell wrote in a blog entry posted over the weekend. Although his statement did not have the consensus of the 27 member states, it does reflect the sentiment of some of them.

Borrell spoke out as top UN officials — Humanitarian Coordinator for the Palestinian territories Lynn Hasting and UN Relief and Works Agency Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini — visited Gaza over the weekend.

At present no humanitarian assistance can enter Gaza, because as of Sunday night the main commercial crossing at Kerem Shalom and the pedestrian one at Erez remained closed, saved for the entry and exist of journalists. Gaza only has three land crossings, the two Israeli ones and a third with Egypt at Rafah. But the Rafah crossing is not set for the large scale transfer of goods.

The closure of the crossings means that a present goods and people can not get in and out of Gaza. Typically the crossings are closed in situation of hostilities and operate normal in period of calm.

For the truce to hold for any meaningful period the crossings would have to reopen.

In speaking with reporters Gantz said Israel’s goal following the latest round of fighting is not to preserve the status quo.

They surveyed the civilian damage done during the 11-day IDF operation to target Hamas terror infrastructure, known as Guardian of the Walls. It began in response to Hamas rocket attacks against Israeli civilians on May 10 and ended early Friday morning.

Some "258 buildings, comprising 1,042 housing and commercial units, had been destroyed" as of Thursday, according to an initial estimate by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. It also estimated that 769 housing units "had been severely damaged, and rendered uninhabitable.” It added that "an additional 14,536 units suffered minor damage."

Hastings said that, "In the coming days, we will launch an inter-agency financial appeal to support our efforts to address new humanitarian needs." In the interim, she said, "the humanitarian community is working hard to bring in essential items, including food, medicine and fuel."

Already, even in advance of a funding drive, the UN plans to release $22 million for immediate needs such as healthcare and water, Hastings said. Last week UNRWA launched a flash $38 million appeal for funding.

Hastings and Lazzarini also visited some of the victims of the IDF bombings.

Israel’s goal following the latest round of fighting, Gantz said, is not to preserve the status quo.

The next time Hamas attacks Israel, the response will be “very aggressive,” Gantz warned. “I’m not promising now that for every rocket or balloon at 3 a.m. I will necessarily attack; I may attack at times that are comfortable for me. I am preserving freedom of action and timing. What is clear is that the force will be much greater.”

Biden said on Friday that it is “essential” for PA President Mahmoud Abbas be recognized as the rightful leader of the Palestinians, as opposed to Hamas, which he pointed out is a terrorist organization.

Gantz similarly said that he seeks to strengthen the Palestinian Authority, while not letting Hamas set the agenda in the Gaza Strip or in the West Bank.

“We have to make an effort to strengthen alliances between moderates in the region,” he added.

Gantz also revived the idea of a “Reconciliation Cabinet,” which was written into his coalition agreement with Netanyahu, but never acted on. Following the rioting in mixed Jewish-Arab towns, Gantz said that he would make a Reconciliation Cabinet a condition of him joining any new government.

Blinken also said that he found the internecine violence between Jews and Arabs in Israel in recent weeks "deeply disturbing," and expressed hope that "Israelis of all persuasions will find ways to come together to try to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. And hopefully that finds expression as well in their politics and in their governments."

Asked by George Stephanopoulos on ABC about the Biden administration's frequent calls for Israelis and Palestinians to have equal measures of security and peace, Blinken said: "It's vitally important that Palestinians feel hope and have opportunity and can live in security, just as it is for Israelis. And there should be equal measures…I think that that hope, that security, that dignity can – will be found in a Palestinian state."

Israel's secret weapon: We have nowhere else to go - comment

Golda Meir’s words are as relevant as ever today, and the past weeks of another mini-war with Hamas and the accompanying spike of antisemitism have only further proven her point.

There’s a story that US President Joe Biden has told many times over the years about his first trip to Israel.

As a freshman senator in 1973, Biden was granted a meeting with prime minister Golda Meir, who together with Yitzhak Rabin briefed Biden on the many threats Israel faced, showing him a series of maps.

“I guess she could see the sense of apprehension on my face,” Biden said in a 2010 retelling of the story. “She said, ‘Senator, don’t look so worried… We Israelis have a secret weapon.’ And I thought she only had said this to me, no one else in the whole world… And I thought she was going to tell me about a new secret weapon.”

So what is Israel’s secret weapon, Biden asked eagerly.

“We have nowhere else to go,” replied Golda.

In 2021, when Israelis travel the world and find success in a broad range of fields, when technology and globalization make a large – but privileged – segment of the global population feel like they hold the world in their hands, some may think that statement is an anachronism.

And yet Golda’s words are as relevant today as ever, with the past two weeks of another mini-war with Hamas and the accompanying spike of antisemitism only further proving her point.

We, the Jewish people, have nowhere else to go.

Israelis and the vast majority of Jews in the world who feel a strong connection to Israel already knew this, of course.

Just walk down the street in Israel and ask any random passerby if they think they would be alive today if there was no Israel. Chances are the person would say “no.”

The majority of Israeli Jews, descended from the 850,000 refugees of the ethnic cleansing of Jews from North Africa and the Middle East – minus our tiny corner of the region – have good reason to say “no.”

I would also say no.

It was the pre-state Yishuv that kept all four of my maternal great-grandparents from meeting the deadly fate of their relatives at the hands of pogromists and then Nazis, and there are countless Israelis with similar stories.

But Hamas and their acolytes, the useful idiots in the West echoing the terrorist group’s charter by chanting the genocidal rallying cry: “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” seem to have missed this point.

When Palestinians compare Israel to crusaders, they’re saying we’re a blip in history, destined to be driven out by a heroic Muslim-led army as was done to the crusaders after 88 years.

But when Palestinians who have picked up on leftist lingo, along with their fellow travelers, present Israel as an illegitimate “settler colony” – as one meme that was shared by influential accounts in recent weeks claimed – they forget a key difference between Israel and actual settler colonies.

When the European Crusades conquered Jerusalem, when the French settled in much of North Africa, when the British took over India, to name some settler colonies, they were still the satellites of a home country, even as they remained for generations. When mid-20th-century rebellions in the colonies were too violent or costly, the European governments packed up and left, evacuating their citizens along with them.

We are in Israel so that we never have to pack our bags and leave again, so that we don’t have to keep the proverbial suitcase by the door. It is because Israel itself is our historic and present home country, and there is no satellite for us.

Palestinians and their advocates like to tell Israelis to go “back” to Poland or Russia or wherever else – it’s always Eastern Europe and not the part of the world from where the majority of Israelis actually come. But, of course, those places are not our homes, and the circumstances under which much of our ancestors left show that those places never were our homes.

In the last two weeks, there has been a 500% spike in recorded antisemitic incidents in the UK, according to the Community Security Trust, and a wave of antisemitic assaults, vandalism and harassment of Jews has hit cities across North America, from Montreal to New York to Tucson to Los Angeles. In Western Europe, antisemitism is there all the time, and it has been for years.

It seems unlikely that this uptick in violence will kick off a wave of Jewish immigration to Israel. While the percentage of American Jews – the largest Diaspora community – who have experienced antisemitism is on the rise, most are able to live safely and comfortably, as Jews should be able to do anywhere in the world.

But we don’t live in a world where Jews can live safely wherever they want. We never have.

The rise in antisemitic attacks comes from those who claim to be standing up for the Palestinians in the latest round of fighting between Israel and Gaza. Mobs of young, keffiyeh-wearing men maraud the streets of LA asking diners in a sushi restaurant if they’re Jewish – not Israeli – so they can pick someone to assault.

In Manhattan, one man took part in a pro-Palestinian march and then went on to bludgeon a Jewish man; the NYPD is using the victim’s bloody kippah as evidence of a hate crime. The assailant, by the way, was featured in an Instagram post by supermodel Bella Hadid, whose father is Palestinian and who participated in the same march. She has nearly 45 million followers. And those are just a couple of examples.

There is something deeply ironic about people trying to “free Palestine” by attacking Diaspora Jews. By turning their violence on Jews outside of Israel, by driving around Jewish neighborhoods to intimidate and assault the residents, by asking people on the street if they are Jewish while brandishing knives, they are expressing their desire to ethnically cleanse their Western countries of Jews.

Don’t they know where Jews go when they’re ethnically cleansed? To Israel, that very place from where they want Jews removed.

But we’re not like the crusaders. We’re still here, 73 years later, and no number of Hamas rockets will get us out of here, not even 4,000 in 11 days, nor will antisemitic attacks on our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora.

And the reason is that we still have our secret weapon: We still have nowhere else to go.

Bennett, Lapid prime minister rotation back on the table

Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid's offer to Yamina chairman Naftali Bennett to go first in a rotation replacing Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister returned to the forefront on Sunday, as sources in the two parties said they expected an agreement to be finalized by the end of the week.

Bennett withdrew his support for a government of change on May 13. But The Jerusalem Post reported exclusively two days later that it was just a tactical maneuver to ease pressure on the party's leaders during Operation Guardian of the Walls and that Bennett would return ahead of the June 2 deadline for Lapid to form a government.

Negotiating teams of Likud and Yamina met over the weekend. The Likud's offer to Bennett was to serve as defense minister after Netanyahu announced two weeks earlier that he had offered Bennett to go first in a rotation in the Prime Minister's Office. The Likud also rescinded its previous offer to Bennett's number two, MK Ayelet Shaked, to serve as foreign minister in a Likud-led government.

Sources close to Shaked said on Sunday night that even though she preferred a coalition with Likud, she would not split Yamina if Bennett decides to form a government with Lapid. Yamina MK Abir Kara is pushing Bennett to form a government of change.

A poll broadcast on Channel 12 broadcast on Sunday found that Yamina would win only five seats and barely cross the electoral threshold if new elections would be held. The Likud would 30 seats, Yesh Atid 21, Blue and White ten, Shas nine, Religious Zioinist Party and United Torah Judaism seven, Labor, Yisrael Beytenu and New Hope six, Joint List and Yamina five and Meretz and Ra'am (United Arab List) four.

Lapid met with Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz and Labor leader Michaeli on Sunday evening and Yesh Atid will negotiate with parties in his camp on Monday in an effort to make progress toward coalition agreements. There have been no contacts between Bennett and Lapid since Bennett withdrew his support for a government of change ten days ago.

Bennett called upon party leaders on Sunday to make compromises and to prevent a fifth election in under two-and-a-half years. Bennett's associates declined to say to whom his message was specifically addressed, though a strong possibility is New Hope leader Gideon Sa'ar, who has refused to enter a government in which Netanyahu rotates as prime minister.

"Whoever drags Israel to a fifth election, to more poison and hate, to another year of the state not being able to function, to wasting huge sums of money plays into the hands of those who want to harm us," Bennett wrote in a long post on Facebook. "That would be one mistake too many. This is the time for all of us to make an effort… There remain a number of options for forming a government, if we just rescind our boycotts and understand the importance of the moment."

A source close to Sa'ar said he was aware that the New Hope leader was the intended target of the message but that he would not respond.

Bennett did not reveal what options he referred to. He said the war with Hamas proved that neither Netanyahu nor Left was the enemy of Israel.

Most of Bennett's message was an attack on Netanyahu's handling of the war on matters of security and public diplomacy. He said the prime minister's decisions were tainted by personal and political considerations and "a smokescreen of worshipping the leader" and that Netanyahu had made poor decisions and appointments.

"I don't remember a time of such weakness, a lack of functioning and national embarrassment," Bennett wrote. "We should not be surprised: The writing was on the wall."

The Likud hit back, slamming Bennett and Sa'ar for "talking right-wing, but acting left-wing" and urging them to rule out joining a left-wing government.

"Only a right-wing government led by Prime Minister Netanyahu can successfully confront the wide-range of challenges Israel faces," the party said in a statement that Netanyau retweeted. "Not a left-wing government dependent on the Joint List and in whose security cabinet sit [Meretz leader] Nitzan Horowitz, [Meretz faction head] Tamar Zandberg and [Labor chairwoman] Merav Michaeli."

The Likud said Bennett and Sa'ar were continuing to turn leftward.

"Even after Hamas's murderous attacks, the violent riots in Israel and renewed talk of a Palestinian state that will turn into a massive Hamastan, these politicians continue to work to establish a government that will be dependant on the Joint List and left-wing parties like Lapid, Meretz and Labor," Netanyahu's party said.

Likud faction chairman Miki Zohar added, "there is Right and there is Left. Bennett and Sa'ar, the time has come for you to choose a side."

Presidential candidates Miriam Peretz and Isaac Herzog were given offices at the Knesset on Sunday to use to run their campaigns for the June 2 race for president.

Peretz said she was emotional about receiving the office but she would instead travel between the offices of the MKs and request their support.

“The responses and the praise I have received since announcing my candidacy have been heartwarming,” she said. “I thank the citizens of Israel from the bottom of my heart for their support. I believe and I hope that support will be expressed in the voting of the majority of the Knesset. I will be working to achieve that.”

Peretz referred to the President’s Residence in Hebrew in the feminine form.

She called Herzog a “dear gentleman who I respect, love and appreciate” but said Israel needed a new kind of president who comes from the people.

Herzog called Peretz a worthy and respectable opponent. He said he hoped the election would be fair, good and successful.

In an interview with Yediot Aharonot over the weekend, Peretz addressed the question of how she would react if elected and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sought a pardon from her in his criminal cases. She responded that Netanyahu has not been convicted.

“I believe in our legal system in Israel and in law and order,” she said. “Pardoning is a long process that entails, first of all, a conviction in court, sitting in prison and requesting a pardon. From the state’s attorney’s office, it goes to the justice minister and then the president. The system is not automatic. If and when we would get to such a moment, I would use my best judgment.”

Belarus scrambles jet to force plane to land and arrests opponent, sparking fury

Authorities in Belarus scrambled a fighter jet and flagged what turned out to be a false bomb alert to force a Ryanair plane to land on Sunday and then detained an opposition-minded journalist, drawing criticism from across Europe.

The dramatic incident saw a Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jet escort a Ryanair-operated passenger plane flying from Athens to Lithuania. The plane was instead suddenly diverted to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where authorities detained journalist Roman Protasevich who had been on board.

Data from the flightradar24.com website showed the plane was diverted just two minutes before it was due to cross into Lithuanian airspace from Belarus.

EU member state Lithuania, where Protasevich is based, urged the European Union and NATO to respond. Germany called for an immediate explanation and Poland's prime minister called it a "reprehensible act of state terrorism."

Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, said Belarus's action was "utterly unacceptable," while British foreign minister Dominic Raab said there would be serious implications for what he called "outlandish action."

Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who like Protasevich operates from Lithuania, called on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to kick Belarus out of the organization.

The incident is certain to worsen already dire relations between the West and Belarus, which has been tightly controlled since 1994 by President Alexander Lukashenko.

Opponents accuse him of rigging a presidential election in his own favor last year and of then cracking down violently on the opposition. He denies electoral fraud.

APPEAL TO NATO

Ryanair said in a statement that the plane's crew was notified by Belarus of a potential security threat on board and were instructed to divert to the nearest airport, Minsk.

The plane landed safely, passengers were offloaded and security checks were made by local authorities, it said, saying it expected the aircraft to resume its journey later on Sunday.

Protasevich, 26, worked for an online opposition news service NEXTA, a Telegram channel that broadcast footage of mass protests against Lukashenko last year at a time when it was hard for foreign media to do so.

Protasevich, who now works for a different Telegram channel called Belamova and who describes himself on Twitter ironically as the first "journalist-terrorist" in history, is based in Lithuania.

He is wanted in Belarus on extremism charges and stands accused of organizing mass riots and of inciting social hatred, allegations he denies.

Belarusian news agency BelTA reported that Lukashenko had personally ordered the warplane to escort the Ryanair plane to Minsk. No explosives were found, it said.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda called for an international response.

"I call on NATO and EU allies to immediately react to the threat posed to international civil aviation by the Belarus regime. The international community must take immediate steps that this does not repeat," Nauseda said.

Lithuanian presidential adviser Asta Skaisgiryte said the operation to force the plane carrying around 170 people from 12 countries to land seemed to be pre-planned.

The Belarusian department for organized crime control reported that Protasevich had been detained before deleting the statement from its Telegram channel.

Around 35,000 people have been detained in Belarus since August, human rights groups say. Dozens have received jail terms. Authorities say that more than 1,000 criminal cases have been launched.
