Afghanistan: 'America will pay a pricefor years to come,' say experts
Iran wants Taliban to embrace 'diversity' of Afghanistan
When it comes Afghanistan, Iran's policy is complex.

While the US was planning to leave Afghanistan – agreeing to a deal with the Taliban and abandoning the Afghan government, cutting off funding and contracts, and leaving military posts in the dead of night – Iran was angling for a more inclusive Afghanistan. While the US paid lip service to diversity, with the US embassy in Kabul tweeting a Gay Pride flag in June, it had in fact already decided to leave more than a year ago. But Iran must deal with the Taliban as neighbors to the east – and Tehran is concerned that the extremism of the 1990s will return.
This is a complex problem for Iran, which has traditionally sought to protect and cultivate Shi’ites around the Middle East, sometimes to empower them and other times to export its “revolution.” But the Islamic Republic also has far-right religious friends from other groups, such as Hamas. This is because the Iranian IRGC world view isn’t just about Shi’ites, but working with anti-Western, anti-Israel and other elements across the region.

When it comes to Afghanistan, its policy is also complex. Iran had deep tensions with the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the 1990s when the Taliban were viciously suppressing Hazzara Shi’ites in Afghanistan and hosting Al Qaeda elements who sought to target Iran. The sectarianism bubbling to the surface in those days pitted Sunni jihadists against minority Shi’ites who, at the far end of the jihadist spectrum, they viewed as subhuman infidels similar to the Nazi view of Jews. ISIS, for instance, committed genocide against Shi’ites, Yazidis and others.
Iran’s tensions with the Taliban shifted when America invaded Afghanistan after 9/11. Tehran is cynical and pragmatic, and much as it once was happy to accept Saddam’s air force fleeing from Iraq, it welcomed Al Qaeda elements and hosted them. Now Iran is watching as the Taliban come to power and Iran has met with them. Where Iran agrees with the Taliban is the need to get the US out of Afghanistan. But where it disagrees is in how the Taliban may treat minorities.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency confirms this by highlighting the “ethnic-religious diversity” of Afghanistan. It wants to see the Taliban “implement its way of governing according to the will of the people.” One could be forgiven for mistaking the Iranian pro-IRGC media statements for something that comes out of Washington. “Will of the people” and “diversity” are usually the hallmarks of US policy and governance.
IRAN'S LOGIC is not that this “will of the people” needs to be democracy, but rather that “a new era of political, social and security developments in Iran's eastern neighbor began.” It is saying that the Taliban may form an “inclusive political system.” But Tehran cautions: “The face of the Taliban is associated with violence and extremism in the eyes of most of the people of this country as well as the world public opinion, and the history of this group's rule over Afghanistan is not desirable in the public mind.”
Iran acknowledges that the Taliban have a new public relations campaign trying to change their image. “Although the Taliban continue to insist on the formation of an ‘Islamic Emirate’, during this time they have repeatedly stressed the need for interaction, dialogue and tolerance with internal and external parties and are trying to increase their ‘soft power.’”
Iran, which proclaims itself an Islamic Republic, is concerned about an Islamic Emirate? Iran wants groups in Afghanistan that are linked to Iran, such as Shi’ites it has recruited to fight in Syria, to still have connections with Tehran. It wants to see power divided between groups. “Such remarks by Taliban officials have sometimes been practical in recent weeks, as they have acted peacefully in dealing with government elements and even former government officials.”
But Iran’s media cautions that it is too early to make a final judgment on the Taliban's definitive policy of forming an inclusive government. “If it wants to be accepted by its people and the world public opinion, it has no choice but to show in practice that the image of the Taliban's 5-year rule (1996-2001) should be forgotten.”
Iran, which appeared to welcome the Taliban victory, now awaits a future test of the Taliban's discourse to see if they have changed their ways.

The Taliban held their first official news conference in Kabul on Tuesday since the shock seizure of the city, declaring they wanted peaceful relations with other countries and would respect the rights of women within the framework of Islamic law.
"We don't want any internal or external enemies," the movement's main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said.
Mujahid said women would be allowed to work and study and "will be very active in society but within the framework of Islam."

The Taliban would not seek retribution against former soldiers and members of the Western-backed government, he said, saying the movement was granted an amnesty for former Afghan government soldiers as well as contractors and translators who worked for international forces.
"Nobody is going to harm you, nobody is going to knock on your doors," he said.
He said private media could continue to be free and independent in Afghanistan, adding the Taliban was committed to the media within its cultural framework.
Mujahid's conciliatory tone contrasted sharply with comments by Afghan First Vice President Amrullah Saleh, who declared himself the "legitimate caretaker president" and vowed that he would not bow to Kabul's new rulers.
The Taliban news conference came as the United States and Western allies evacuated diplomats and civilians the day after scenes of chaos at Kabul airport as Afghans desperate to flee the Taliban thronged to the terminal.
As they rush to evacuate diplomats and civilians from Afghanistan, foreign powers are assessing how to respond to the changed situation on the ground.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the Taliban should allow all those who wanted to leave the country to depart, adding that NATO's aim was to help build a viable state in Afghanistan.
There has been widespread criticism of the US withdrawal amid the chaotic scenes at Kabul airport. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said "the images of despair at Kabul airport shame the political West."
Under a US troops withdrawal pact struck last year, the Taliban agreed not to attack foreign forces as they leave.
In response to the press conference, a UN spokesperson said "we will need to see what actually happens. We will need to see acts on the ground in terms of promises kept."
FLIGHTS RESUME
US military flights evacuating diplomats and civilians from Afghanistan restarted on Tuesday after the runway at Kabul airport was cleared of thousands desperate to flee.
US forces took charge of the airport - their only way to fly out of Afghanistan - on Sunday, as the militants wound up a week of rapid advances by taking over Kabul without a fight, 20 years after they were ousted by a US-led invasion.
The number of civilians had thinned out, a Western security official at the airport told Reuters. On Monday US troops had fired warning shots to disperse crowds and people clung to a US military transport plane as it taxied for take-off.
At least 12 military flights had taken off, a diplomat at the airport said. Planes were due to arrive from countries including Australia and Poland to pick up their nationals and Afghan colleagues.
President Joe Biden said he had to decide between asking US forces to fight endlessly or follow through on a withdrawal agreement negotiated by his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump.
"I stand squarely behind my decision," Biden said. "After 20 years I've learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw US forces."
Facing criticism from even his own diplomats, he blamed the Taliban's takeover on Afghan political leaders who fled and its army's unwillingness to fight.

Military flights evacuating diplomats and civilians resumed earlier on Tuesday after the runway at Kabul airport was cleared of thousands of people desperate to flee after the Taliban seized the capital.
The Netherlands has sent a second military plane to Afghanistan to help evacuate people from the country, fearing time for the operation is running out, Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag said on Tuesday.
Kaag said the aim was to extract at least the almost 40 local Afghan staff at the Dutch Embassy and their families, along with translators and other Afghans whose lives may be in danger from Taliban militants because of their work for the Netherlands or non-governmental organizations.
But Kaag said it was very uncertain how many people would get out and how much time there was for the operation. "We will do everything we can to get those who deserve our protection out", she said in a debate with Dutch members of parliament.
"But we are not in control of the situation (and) we have to assume we only have very limited time. The grim reality is that that people might not be able to reach (Kabul) airport."
Kaag added the Dutch were reliant on US armed forces to protect the airport and on American negotiations with the Taliban to help ensure safe passage for those who want to leave Afghanistan.
The Dutch military sent an initial flight to Afghanistan on Monday, but that plane was unable to land in Kabul due to the chaos at the airport.
Meanwhile, a second Czech plane left Kabul on Tuesday, evacuating Czechs and local staff from Afghanistan after the Taliban seized control of the country, Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek said.
The Czech Republic evacuated 46 citizens and local workers and their families on Sunday. Tuesday's flight included the country's ambassador to Afghanistan, Kulhanek said.
Luxembourg said on Tuesday that it would send a military plane to Kabul in a joint move with Belgium to evacuate its citizens and allies.
The Grand Duchy said it was in contact with four Luxembourg citizens and two Luxembourg residents who are still in Afghanistan.
Belgium is sending planes to Islamabad, Pakistan's capital, from where they will fly to Afghanistan to evacuate people in the country after the Taliban takeover, Belgian media reported on Tuesday.
US military flights, along with some civilian aircraft, are flying in and out of Kabul's airport, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.
US Army Major General William Taylor, with the Joint Staff, said that there would be more than 4,000 US troops by the end of the day and so far there had not been any hostile interactions with the Taliban.
Taylor said the aim was to have one flight taking off from Kabul per hour.
Lufthansa said it was organizing three special flights to bring evacuees from Afghanistan to Frankfurt, with the first passenger jet, an Airbus A340, to take off from Tashkent later on Tuesday.
Two further flights to Frankfurt, from Tashkent and Doha, are planned for Wednesday, a spokesperson for the German airline said.
US forces have secured Kabul airport and started an airlift to fly out diplomats and civilians after the fall of the Afghan capital to the Taliban. Commercial airlines are then ferrying evacuees on from airports in the region.

Iran's embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul remains open and fully active, state media reported on Tuesday, a day after Tehran welcomed the "military failure" of its arch-foe the United States as it withdraws its forces from Afghanistan.
The report came as many countries evacuated their embassy staff from Kabul due to concerns over the security situation after Taliban insurgents seized the city, prompting thousands of people to throng the airport in an attempt to flee the country.
Shi’ite Muslim Iran has long been a foe of the hardline Sunni Muslim Taliban in neighboring Afghanistan, but in the past few years its officials have openly met Taliban leaders. In July, Tehran hosted a meeting of then-Afghan government representatives and a high-level Taliban political committee.

"The embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kabul is fully open and active. Iran's consulate general in Herat is also open and active," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh, quoted by the official news agency IRNA. He did not elaborate.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said on Monday the "military failure" of the United States in Afghanistan and its withdrawal of forces offered an opportunity to establish lasting peace in the war-ravaged nation.
The Taliban have ordered their fighters to maintain discipline and not to enter any diplomatic buildings or interfere with embassy vehicles, a senior official of the group said on Tuesday.
On Sunday, Khatibzadeh said Iran had wound down activities at its consulates in the Afghan cities of Mazar-i-Sharif, Jalalabad, and Kandahar.

Jordan and Israel signed an agricultural cooperation agreement ahead of the shmita year, in a meeting between Israeli Agriculture Minister Oded Forrer and his Jordanian counterpart Rasan al-Majali on the border between the countries on Tuesday.
“Shmita” is the biblical commandment for the Land of Israel to lay fallow every seven years, and Jewish farmers in most of modern Israel must observe it for their produce to be certified kosher. One solution Israel has found is to purchase produce from neighboring Arab populations; others, which are preferred by many religious Zionists, include symbolically selling their land to a gentile or moving their farms from private to collectively-owned for the shmita year.
Forrer and Majali met on the Allenby Bridge, along with the ambassadors of the two countries.
They agreed for Israel to import Jordanian produce in the coming years. The Agriculture Ministry said it would diversify the sources of fruits and vegetables for those who keep kosher, and take advantage of benefits in the trade agreement between the countries.

The ministers also discussed ways to partner on innovation and technological advances in agriculture, as well as fighting diseases in plants.
They also discussed fighting fires in both countries, and the role farmers can play.
The meeting “emphasizes the importance of the ties between Israel and Jordan to strengthen neighborly relations and promote cooperation, and the importance of the agricultural field as a way to advance relations between the countries and the nations,” a spokesman for Forrer stated.
In the two months since the new government took office in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Defense Minister Benny Gantz met with Jordanian King Abdullah, and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid met with his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Sfadi.

Lebanon's Christian Kataeb Party called on Monday to prepare for a field confrontation to bring down the Lebanese government "by all available means," after at least 27 people were killed in a fuel tank explosion in Akkar in northern Lebanon.
The party, which played an important role in the Lebanese Civil War, called on Lebanese President Michel Aoun and the entire Lebanese parliament to resign and called on the United Nations Security council to hold an emergency meeting on the situation in Lebanon.
“The Lebanese are subjected to a genocide carried out by a criminal group. Thus, support must be provided for them so as to stand socially and economically during these difficult circumstances until the parliamentary elections are held and a democratic transition is secured under an international supervision,” read a statement issued by the Kataeb Political Bureau following its weekly meeting in Saifi.

The party warned that it could no longer stay silent about the "crimes of this murderous regime, and its patron and guide,
Hezbollah
, which repeatedly explodes its people and leaves them to their fate."
“The time has come to put an end to this suicidal slope, to renounce this authority with its entire system, and prepare for a field confrontation to bring it down by all available means,” added the Kataeb Party.
The party also warned against suppressing the rebels and trying to intimidate them through arrest, calling these practices worthy of what it called an occupying power.
On Saturday night, a fuel tank exploded in Akkar in northern Lebanon, killing at least 27 people and injuring dozens. As of Monday morning, searches were ongoing for missing persons.
On Sunday, Lebanese reports indicated that the fuel tanks had been holding fuel which was meant to be smuggled to Syria. Hezbollah has been accused of smuggling oil from Lebanon into Syria in the past.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing and no official statement has been made concerning the cause of the explosion.
The explosion quickly led to another explosion in the Lebanese political scene as some officials from the Future Movement, led by former prime minister Saad Hariri, and the Free Patriotic Movement, founded by Aoun and allied with Hezbollah, accused one another of being responsible for the situation and even going as far as accusing specific MPs of being directly involved with the tanks that exploded.
Lebanese media reports have expressed concerns that the anger and unrest following the explosion could devolve into violence.
On Sunday, former Lebanese prime minister Saad Hariri called for Lebanese President Michel Aoun to resign, telling him to "leave now and preserve some dignity for your future, because you will not find an embassy to shelter you soon or a plane that will help you escape the curse of history."
During a meeting of the Supreme Defense Council on Sunday, Aoun warned against "the politicization of the tragedy that occurred in Al-Tleil and the exploitation of the blood of the martyrs to raise slogans and launch calls that clearly reveal the intentions of those who launched them and their involvement in schemes aimed at harming the regime and its institutions."

Finally and very sadly, being an anti-Zionist Jew can no longer be defined by Jews alone. We have seen over this past year increasing incidents of Jewish communities being attacked under the guise of the "Free Palestine" movement. Synagogues were vandalized, Jews of all ideologies have been attacked, and Jewish students on campus have been intimidated. Whether we like it or not, many antisemites and racists use the Palestinian issue as an excuse to physically and verbally attack Jews. Consequentially, anyone lending a hand to the Free Palestine Movement is lending a hand to a movement used to target Jews wherever they are – and that is the crossing of a red line – aligning oneself with organizations and individuals that are harassing Jews on campus, beating hassidic Jews on the streets of New York, and stabbing rabbis in Boston.

We can not ignore anti-Zionist Jews any longer - opinion
Young anti-Zionist Jews have a straightforward question: Why can't we have Judaism without Zionism?

Who has not seen the PLO flag-wearing Neturei Karta Jews at the Israel Day Parade or any other pro-Israel rally? For decades we either laughed, nodded, dismissed, or were enraged by the anomaly of Jews publicly taking sides against the Jewish state. Yet, at no point did we need to address anti-Zionism in our community as something serious.
That has all changed over the past year. No. It is not just Peter Beinart saying Kinot on Tisha Be'Av for Palestinians displaced in 1948. A growing number of young Jews who have gone to our day schools may sit next to you in shul or be sitting at your Shabbat table. They deserve a thoughtful response from all of us.
Young anti-Zionist Jews have a straightforward question: Why can't we have Judaism without Zionism? Fair question. Why can't we have a day school education with no “Hatikva,” synagogues without Israeli flags upfront, rabbis that are not busy leading AIPAC missions to DC or trips to Israel, Hillel on campus without speakers coming to defend Israel, young Jews going on trips that are not Birthright trips to Israel, and Shabbat dinners that are not all about Israel-related content?
IN 2015 my wife and I began hosting Shabbat dinners. Since then, we have hosted more than 500 guests, most of whom we had never met previously. Most often, we did not know who our guests were until they walked through the door, nor did they know us. We had young Jews aspiring to become rabbis in Yeshiva University, Hebrew Union College and JTS. We welcomed guests from all various professional backgrounds, orientations from different countries and even had some non-Jewish tourists who wanted to see what a New York Shabbat table looked like. We had guests from across the political spectrum, some of whom worked professionally for non-profits from CAIR to AIPAC, Zionists, anti-Zionists, often people who cared for neither option – all were welcome.
This kind of big-tent Judaism is one that I passionately believe in, one in which all are welcome, and we create a space that is welcoming to all. That is the kind of community structure we should have. All must be welcome – Zionist or not. If there is a Jew who happens to have the opinion that Jews don't necessarily need to have a state of their own, they must remain a welcome part of our community.
The new wave of anti-Zionist Jews changed this all.
The new anti-Zionist Jews are not like members of the Satmar Hassidic community who hold the theological belief that Jews should not have a state of their own until a miraculous messianic era. The new anti-Zionist Jews are Jews who have decided to wage war against other Jews. They are Jews who advocate for economic boycotts of Israel, which will rob other Jews of their means of livelihood; they are Jews lobbying to limit weapons sales to Israel, choking the Jewish state's ability to defend itself, they are Jews seeking to tilt public opinion against Israel and seeking to diplomatically isolate Israel. This is not about Israel being in the land of Israel with all of the historical and religious meanings that might have; this is about waging war against the largest Jewish community in the world. It is about taking an active role in seeking to harm other Jews.
Peter Beinart could have taken whatever position he wanted on what the meaning of Zionism is. Joining Ben and Jerry's campaign to actively boycott other Jews, whether they live inside or outside the Green Line, in Uganda or Iran, crosses a red line. It is the kind of behavior we cannot contain as a community. This brings us to why it is that Zionism plays a role in our communities when not religiously mandated or inspired.
Two things that have always brought together Jews regardless of place or ideology have been the concept of arevut – a commitment to the well-being of fellow Jews – and a shared belief in the need to secure the future of the Jewish people. Jewish institutions in America did not just pop up. They were built with immense sacrifices.
I think of my grandfather Rabbi Bernard Poupko who miraculously fled the Soviet Union in the 1930s just to come and help build Hillel Day School and much of the Jewish communal structure in Pittsburgh, or of my friend and hero, Rabbi Joseph Polak, who survived the Holocaust to become the Rabbi of Hillel in Boston University and raise funds to build one of the most beautiful and successful Hillel Houses in North America. They sweated and bled because of their commitment to the Jewish people and our shared future.
PASSIONATE ANTI-ZIONIST Jews are entitled to their opinions, but factually speaking, they have prioritized the cause of Palestinian nationalism over that of their fellow Jews. You can agree with them or disagree with them, but the fact is that they have abdicated one cause for the other. They have chosen to harm their fellow Jews in favor of advancing the Palestinian cause. They are entitled to that position, but by doing so, they have taken the exit door to our shared peoplehood.
Inclusion of anti-Zionist Jews is not about Zionism; it is about our shared peoplehood. When Ben and Jerry's announced they would be boycotting Jewish communities beyond the Green Line, New York State Senator Simcha Eichenstein and many other hassidic store owners were the first to condemn the policy and announce a counter-boycott on Ben and Jerry's products. These hassidic Jews may have never been in the Israel Day Parade and likely never sang “Hatikva,” but they knew that an assault on one of us is an assault on all of us. They knew what was behind the singling out of the Jewish State and that it was not about Achad Ha'am or the occupation – it was about being Jewish.
With COVID restrictions I don't know when we will be hosting large Shabbat meals again. While I do not believe we will be able to share a space with anti-Zionist Jews, I do think they deserve answers and explanations to the real questions they have. I hope this is the first of many.

Explosions were heard in Quneitra, Syria at approximately 9 p.m., Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.
Syrian media claimed Israel was behind the explosions.
Arab news agencies report that an Israeli missile attack targeted the Qir al-Nafl area, west of the town of Hader in the northern countryside of Quneitra. Kan reported that there were two missiles launched toward the target.
An IDF spokesperson told Russian media that Israel attacked an army post and no soldiers were killed, Kan reported.
"We don't comment on foreign reports," an Israeli military spokesperson told Reuters.
According to the Palestinian Ma'an news agency, reports claim that one of the targets is a Hezbollah post, and another belongs to Iran.
The area near where UN peacekeepers maintain a longstanding ceasefire between Israel and Syria has a strong presence of Iranian-backed militias led by the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
Israel has over the last two years dramatically expanded airstrikes on suspected Iranian targets in Syria to repel what it sees as a stealthy military encroachment by its regional arch-enemy.
Last week, Arab media reported an explosion on a ship at the port of Latakia, Syria.
Earlier this month, Hezbollah in Lebanon fired rockets towards northern Israel. IDF responded with airstrikes to Lebanon.
Israel says it will not allow Iran and its militias to establish a permanent military presence along its borders that would allow Hezbollah to pose a major threat to its security.
