Father Jegar

2022 Passion Sunday

Listen Later

It is His faithfulness that strengthens our fickle faith.

Father Jegar’s homily on Passion Sunday, or Palm Sunday, begins with the stark contrasts that characterize the beginning of Holy Week. He reflects on the transition from the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, symbolized by palm branches and shouts of "Hosanna," to the solemn reading of the Passion narrative, where the same crowd turns against Jesus, leading to His crucifixion.

This juxtaposition serves as a metaphor for the fickleness of human faith and loyalty. Father Jegar points out how quickly we can switch from fervent devotion to abandonment, paralleling the crowd’s swift shift from celebration to denial of Jesus. He uses this observation to challenge the congregation to examine their own faithfulness, especially in relation to their Lenten commitments, which often start strong but may wane as challenges arise.

The core of the homily delves into the nature of true kingship as embodied by Christ. Unlike earthly kings who might rule with power and glory, Jesus' kingship is marked by humility and sacrifice—themes that are central to the Passion narrative. Father Jegar invites the congregation to reflect on their expectations of God and to embrace humility, allowing their preconceived notions to be transformed by the reality of God’s unconditional, sacrificial love.

As Holy Week unfolds, the homily calls for a deep, personal introspection into the ways followers of Christ might similarly betray or abandon Him when He does not meet their expectations. It’s a call to remain steadfast in faith, recognizing the profound humility and love of a king who would die for His people. This reflection sets the tone for a week of contemplative devotion, leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.
