While David had all it took to follow the “path” of great destiny by joining the military, for reasons I don't know, he ended up as a shepherd. There have been several theories concerning how David was treated by his family. While these accounts were not recorded in the current canonical Bible, we could make inferences that David did not have the best childhood growing up. But that's not our focus for today.
