There are very few things that change your life as much as publishing a book does. For better or worse, being a published author is like a smokescreen. People will give you more respect; people will see you differently. One thing that publishing a book does is change your environment. As a published author, you now have access to more and better stages; you can get more media exposure, and you can meet people you perhaps wouldn’t have been able to in the past. This only makes sense because if you do something that changes peoples’ lives, then your life will be changed as a result, too.
