Guest: Denise Fong - Hong Kong-Chinese Canadian (PhD Candidate, UBC Interdisciplinary Studies Graduate Program)

Chinese-Canadian migration history and stories about Chinese Canadians in the early days of Canada are often overlooked and ignored in Canadian history lessons and mainstream media. In today’s episode, I have Denise Fong, a Hong Kong-Chinese Canadian living in Canada involved in bringing Chinese-Canadian diaspora migration stories and history to a wider audience in her work in academia and being a co-curator of two Chinese Canadian museum exhibitions in Vancouver.

In our conversation we covered topics like:

  • Her cultural roots and how she got interested in the Chinese-Canadian identity and experiences of Chinese-Canadian diaspora
  • Her thoughts on Chinese-Canadian diaspora
  • The work that she does and the exhibitions that she helped curate
  • Chinese-Canadian migration history
  • What Chinese-Canadians are doing in Canada for their communities and heritage preservation
  • Our favourite Hong Kong foods
