22 - The Lobotomy: The Medical Worlds Great Mistake

Listen Later

If you thought that scene in Sucker Punch where the doctor gave lobotomies with an ice pick was artistic exaggeration – well, you'd be wrong mi amigo. That's exactly how Walter Freeman, a specialist of lobotomies in the 1940s, performed thousands of operations. The lobotomy was considered to be such a popular "cure" for mental illness that Freeman would perform up to 25 lobotomies a day, using only an ice pick-shaped instrument and hammer, without anaesthesia, while reporters would watch. Freeman's crazy antics didn't scare off potential patients either. While some were being forced against their will to take the procedure many were begging for the chance. How did the lobotomy ever become an accepted medical practice? Find out as we go under the knife or should I say pic and get our brains a little scrambled today on Brain Bitez.
