A common and worrisome question that I keep hearing from my students is: what kind of job (if any) will I get if I choose to pursue the major I am most interested in? I get it. The fear is real because jobs help you pay the bills. But let me set the record straight. The purpose of going to college is not just to get a job. The purpose of going to college is to set you up for life --and life is bigger than your first job out of college.
In this episode, I talk about the unlikelihood that your major will actually be connected to your future job (and the exceptions to this rule), the importance of following your interests, and how unassuming majors can be beneficial in the real world with real-life examples. I’ll also explain why choosing “the right” major doesn’t guarantee anything and why it’s up to you to set your course.
What We Cover:
“Keep in mind that college is not the end of your life. A lot of students think, well, I need to pick the perfect degree so I can get the perfect job, and then everything will work out. But it doesn’t really work like that.”
