Good afternoon. New York. I'm Aaron Jolly.
Here's the story today. A cold front is sweeping through the state right now. This front is dragging a wave of low pressure with it. That means light snow is spreading from west to east overnight. The air behind this front is much colder. So, after the snow passes, temperatures are going to crash.
In the next 24 hours. Step outside this afternoon and it feels deceivingly mild. New York City is sitting at 51 degrees. Down in the Capital Region, you're seeing 49 degrees. but head north or west. and the numbers drop. Western New York is at 46 degrees. Central New York is also at 46. The air quality is moderate today, so it's a decent afternoon to get outside before the weather changes.
But here's the thing. That cold front is moving in. Snow starts in Western New York around 8 P.M. Tonight. It reaches the Capital Region and Central New York by midnight. New York City sees snow by 7 A.M. Sunday. Most areas will pick up a coating to an inch. The hills south of Albany could see up to two inches. Any snow that falls will stick to the roads, so watch for black ice tonight.
Sunday turns much colder. Highs in the Capital Region struggle to reach 30 degrees. Western New York only hits 24. Central New York tops out near 24. New York City is the mild spot at 38 degrees. but the real story is Sunday night. Under clear skies, temperatures plummet. The Adirondacks could drop to 15 below zero. Albany falls to 6 above. New York City drops to 18. It's going to be a raw and cold start to Monday.
Here's your heads-up for the week ahead. Tuesday brings another system. This one starts as snow in the morning. It mixes with sleet and rain by the afternoon. Highs climb into the upper 30s. Then, a big warm-up arrives. Rain is likely Wednesday through Friday. By Thursday and Friday, highs surge into the 50s. That's a 20-degree jump from the start of the week. Spring is about two weeks away. and the weather is starting to feel like it.
That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow. Take care
