(ENG) Online Language Exchange (https://onlinelanguageexchange.com/) began in April 2020 when the global pandemic canceled all of the language exchange events in Dublin. So two guys from Dublin teamed up to connect and build an online community of language learners through structured and dynamic conversational practise on a fun and friendly platform. Brian Heavey and his team from Language Exchange Ireland have been hosting language exchanges for over 9 years and pre-COVID there were 3 weekly events in Dublin and one in Cork. Dáire Bermingham has been running Language Exchange Switzerland for 5 years and is operating out of 4 cities.
Since starting the online events in April there have been close to 10,000 people connecting from all over the world (literally!) and the community is growing fast with a really positive vibe.
The system ensures everyone gets an equal amount of time to practise speaking their target language. You are placed into small groups (2-6 people) with native speakers and you speak 10mins of your language then 10mins of your target language. You are then moved to another group with different people to do the same again.
We had a special talk with Brian Heavey, the founder of Online Language Exchange, in which he could explain in detail how the meetings work. He also gave us some tips about the language learning process and, as always, he gave us a cultural tip at the end of the episode.
