[Slide 1] Turn in your bible to James chapter 5.
Over the last two paragraphs in the book of James we have considered a lack that his audience may have. A lack of which God has Sovereignly placed trials in their life to rid them. It is a lack of proper deference to God. Not putting God in His proper place. They had taken God’s throne, and needed to get off it and let Him be God.
The first symptom of this lack is their malicious speech toward other believers and their retribution or vengeance against a brother for some crime against them. James calls his readers to the reality that God alone is the lawgiver and judge of His law. He will separate the innocent from the guilty and He alone will assign the proper punishment for those who violate His law. He doesn’t need someone to fill that role. He’s got it covered.
The second symptom of this lack is their presumption to be in control of their lives. From where they will go, how long they will live, and what they will do, they may consider themselves to be the author of their own destinies. That with the right amount of grit and determination they can do whatever they put their mind to. James calls his readers to the reality that God alone is in Sovereign control over EVERY SINGLE ATOM of his creation. And wherever their lives take them and in whatever situation they may find themselves, they must begin with the assumption that God, and God alone, has decreed that they be in that time and place. Even when we are tempted and even when we fall – God has designed even this for His glory and if we are His children, He has also designed it for our good.
But this last text is by far the most obscure. While we may easily figure out how God must be reverenced here, it may not be easy to see how that connects to James’ audience or their lack of giving deference to God. And if we can’t figure out how it connects to James’ audience, it will be very difficult to see how it connects to us.
But I assure you – at the 11th hour – we’ll make that connection
I am in James chapter 5. I’ll be reading from the LSB today, but you can follow along in the pew bible on page 1363, or whatever version you prefer. Starting at verse 1.
Transition:
One of the many joys in parenting is the times that you get to correct your children when they are not expecting it. Like when you are correcting your youngest for their behavior and bad choices, only to turn to your oldest right after that and say – and why didn’t you stop them from doing what they did? My how the tables have turned!
