For several decades a very prominent personality known as “The Voodoo Queen’ held New Orleans spellbound. Marie Laveau staged ceremonies in which participants became possessed by Voodoo spirits; she dispensed charms and potions, told fortunes, and even healed the sick. Marie Laveau had an extremely complex reputation in later life. Although a local newspaper made her out to be a monster, she was also known as a kind and caring person.
