The term scarcity mentality versus an abundant mindset was coined by Stephen Covey in his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. A scarcity mindset is where you feel there are limited resources to achieve your goals and drives the primitive part of our brain back to its evolutionary roots of basic survival. So, if you are out to dinner and you’re having a hard time stopping because you’re never going to have this amazing sushi again, you activate the scarcity mindset that drives you to keep eating from a lack vantage point. On the flip side, you also have an abundant mindset. This is your growth mindset where you are here learning – where you feel there is ample to go around - money isn’t lacking, resources aren’t lacking, and food isn’t lacking. It’s where you feel abundant and don’t feel like you must act at the moment; you can take your time, savor food, appreciate what you do in fact have and avoid feeling like this is your last supper. I want you to be aware when your scarcity mindset is at play during meals and with food.
