AI could enable Four-Day Week in US, UK.
Two studies suggest that the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) could allow approximately 28% of workers in the US and the UK to transition to a four-day workweek. The research, conducted by the group Autonomy, indicates that in the US, 35 million workers (28% of the workforce) could adopt a four-day week within the next decade with the help of AI. Additionally, 71% of US workers could potentially reduce their hours by at least 10% through the use of AI systems like ChatGPT. A similar study for the UK suggests that 28% of workers (8.8 million people) could shift from a five-day to a four-day workweek using AI. The research emphasizes the potential for AI to create more free time for employees, with the head of research at Autonomy advocating for a shorter working week as the ideal way to ensure that AI benefits both workers and companies. The World Economic Forum's global survey also indicates that approximately 75% of companies plan to incorporate AI. Elon Musk has expressed the belief that AI will eventually surpass human intelligence, stating that people can still have jobs, but AI will be capable of performing all tasks.

Working only 4 days per week is my dream! Sounds sweet that's what I have been willing to do.
Indeed I am the one who uses AI for my work, mainly for spell check or writing correction of emails. Sadly enough, it is unlikely to make 4 days of work happen in my workplace even if we improve productivity by using AI. However, it is perfectly amazing that 28% of companies in the US, and UK could allow workers to make a transition to a four-day workweek thanks to AI.
For me, currently working 50 hours per week with 2 jobs, brings me one day off on Saturdays, which is surprisingly actually less than I used to work in Japan but I had 2 days off a week in Japan which was nice. Say the least, modern life needs 2 days off definitely. In my opinion, mostly it affects the quality of life, you probably feel mental fatigue rather than physical fatigue. For me, "repetition" is the most toxic, as I need some improvement or progress in the way I want.
My main concern is regarding to statement from Elon Musk.
People can still have jobs, but AI will be capable of performing all tasks. It sounds like people are likely to lose their jobs due to AI. From my perspective, optimistically, I still believe people can handle AI even if AI surpasses human intelligence. Ultimately, I don't think we need to compete with AI as a creature. I am not going to talk about a possible war between humans and AI like sci-fi movies but I think I need to look into the thoughts Elon Musk has on this statement to get a better understanding of AI.
Do you think AI is likely to usher in a new era of four-day workweeks? Do you feel any threads towards AI?
