#25 - The Legend of Polybius (Arcade Games & The Men In Black)

Listen Later

This week, Coose and Mowen discuss the urban legend of Polybius. If you haven't heard of Polybius before, it's a hybrid conspiracy myth about a fictitious 1981 arcade game. The legend states that the game was a supposedly crowdsourced psychology experiment based in Portland, Oregon, which was run by a shadowy top-secret arm of the USA government. Once played, the game is alleged to have produced intense psychoactive and addictive effects in the player, with many gamers reportedly suffering from awful side effects once finished playing. Another part of this super interesting tale is that the arcade machines were said to have been visited periodically by the infamous 'men in black' for the purpose of data-mining the machines and analyzing how the games affected the unsuspecting people who played them. Could this actually have happened? Are the men in black more than the legendary film we've all come to love? Was Will Smith involved? Find out what we think on this week's episode of the Gigglebytes!
