📖 Luke 5:33–35 (ESV)



33 And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.”


34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?”


35 “The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.”

The people questioned why Jesus’ disciples did not fast like the Pharisees and John’s followers.
 Jesus reveals a powerful truth: fasting must match the season.

As long as the Bridegroom—Jesus Himself—was with them, it was a time for joy, not mourning. But a time would come when He would be “taken away,” and then fasting would be appropriate.

This passage teaches us:


✔ Fasting is meaningful, but timing matters


✔ Jesus identifies Himself as the Bridegroom—the source of joy


✔ Fasting expresses longing for God’s presence


✔ After His ascension, believers fast for guidance, strength, and devotion


✔ Tradition without understanding leads to confusion
