256. What Cover Letters Taught me About Writing

Listen Later

Back in university, I had a job that required me to write over 600 cover letters for job seekers. Because of this job, I developed a very simple way to structure cover letters, and it influences the way I think about writing to this day. In every cover letter, I would strategically place three elements: where the job seeker is coming from, why he’s a good fit for the job, and why the company is of interest to the job seeker. This framework works well because it provides context, it provides authority, and it provides relevance. Good writing requires these three elements.
