Have you ever wondered why a vernier calliper and a screw gauge can give different measurement readings, even if you designed them specially to be equally precise? It's the same reason why, when boiling water, you dip the thermometer in the water to check its reading, and not place the thermometer beside the pot of boiling water. It all comes down to another very significant factor that is crucial in addition to precision - accuracy. And this is where the Abbe principle comes into play - all in this episode, based on an excerpt from the Universal Principles of Design.
