260: The Library: Darryl “DMC” McDaniels Interview (Final Part)

Listen Later

This week on The Library, we hear the final part of Tim's interview with Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, hip hop legend and one of the founding members of the legendary group Run-DMC. DMC talks Biggie, Tupac, Kendrick, Sarah McLachlan, Larry Smith, depression, artistic freedom and what the future has in store for him.

He tells Tim:

“The artistic freedom was this. You couldn't come close to or couldn't be near similar to anybody else doing this type of music....We come from a creative realm, as young people, very young people, to look at what everybody's doing and you have to do something different. By that being done, you had growth, transformation and evolution. If you don't do that, then just got a lot of people doing that thing that they're doing now, which is the way it is now. We come from a generation were, yo, this guys are doing blue, so I gotta do red. The next people or next person comes long; he's doing blue; he's doing red, so I have to do green. We're all doing the same type of thing but in a different presentation. Here's how it is now. That guy doing blue is popping, well I'm going to do blue too....Now you got 10,000 people doing blue . Out of the 10,000 people that are doing blue, there's going to be one person who does it way better then all of us and we're going to get mad at him. Now all of these other issues that take away from the growth and creativity come into play....”
