27: The Original Pilsner

Listen Later

Episode 27 is a special one as Pete brings a beer that sits very close to his heart — the legendary Pilsner Urquell, the original golden lager first brewed in the city of Plzeň. Often credited as the world’s first pale lager, Pilsner Urquell set the template for the vast majority of beers enjoyed across the globe today. Crisp, clean, slightly bitter and endlessly drinkable, it’s a masterclass in balance — and a perfect centrepiece for a very beer-heavy episode.

Pete and Cliff dive into the history of the brew, why Czech beer culture is so revered, and how something so simple can still be considered one of the greatest beers ever made. There’s also discussion of traditional Czech serving styles, beer foam debates, and whether modern craft beer has overcomplicated what was once beautifully straightforward.

With glasses raised, the lads move into perhaps their most fitting Top 10 yet:

This is where things get competitive. Using global consumption data as a guide (and plenty of pub logic), Pete and Cliff rank the countries that truly deserve to be called the world’s greatest beer drinkers. The usual suspects make appearances — Central Europe, parts of Western Europe — but there are also surprises, rising nations, and a few controversial omissions.

Who really drinks the most beer?
Is it about total volume or per-person dedication?
And does quality matter more than quantity?

Expect heated debate, cultural comparisons, and a few stereotypes (mostly affectionate… mostly).

The conversation then takes a more reflective turn as Pete and Cliff wander into a whimsical discussion about politics and generational change. From “kids these days” to “what we were like back then,” the lads explore how attitudes, values and expectations have shifted over time. It’s not a heavy political segment — more a light, humorous look at how every generation thinks the next one has got it all wrong.

Are things really getting worse — or just different?
Was the past actually better, or just remembered more fondly?

Of course, no episode would be complete without the return of the Dad Joke-Off, where the bar is set low and somehow still missed. Groans are guaranteed.

And finally — don’t miss it — the episode plays out with a song dedicated to Pilsner Urquell, celebrating the beer that started it all. It’s catchy, slightly ridiculous, and the perfect way to close a very lager-loving episode.
