After covering first hand the deepening border crisis between Colombia and Venezuela, Genis Gabriela Alvarado, a National Emmy Award-nominated bilingual storyteller, says “the impact and the effect was so challenging that it really blocked me...and I was not registering things.” Genis, also known as Gabby, decided to quit the news industry in 2019 to tend to her health, among other reasons. She worked for NBC Universal Media under Telemundo Networks’ umbrella in south Florida for four years. Prior to that, she worked at iHeart Radio for almost two years. Gabby adds that the stress that comes with being a journalist also impacted her relationship with loved ones. This interview is in English.
