This week's pod is on Miami Blues — clearly the work of a filmmaker who didn't get to direct anything in the 80s and is making up for lost time in 1990. The pastel sheen of the film feels like immediate nostalgia for a TV show that had just left the air, but the plotting feels more like a pulp novel than either visual medium. Baldwin and Ward play up the black comedy and cynicism of the material, while Jennifer Jason Leigh's empathetic heroine feels more like the work of producer Jonathan Demme.
