Camille Hunt and is a Brooklyn based figurative artist. She was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. She was fortunate to know early in life that art was her purpose and the only option she wanted as a career. After high school she went on to receive her BFA in painting with an emphasis on realism at the University of Mississippi. Post graduation Camille left the US on a four year backpacking hiatus across the world painting murals and portraits in exchange for food and accommodation. During her 4th year of travel she found herself in Melbourne Australia teaching life drawing in the city center. Her work has always been based around figurative work since as long as she can remember. Throughout my childhood, teenage years, and even adulthood she struggled on and off with eating disorders and body dysmorphia and her art is symbolic of those struggles. Her series of work today revolves around body positivity and vulnerability. She seeks volunteers through Instagram to be painted and then printed on paper or canvas. The experience is held in her studio at safe and judgement free space. The models come into the studio where she has a pre planned composition, and then begins to teach them how to lay on the canvas. Through this process the model and she are creating art together, but also getting to know each other. Some models come in for a new experience, some to challenge their insecurities, and others just for the sake of art. This series is special because it allows people to interact, but also see their body in a different light.
In this episode Camille takes us on her travels around the world, her rebellious nature and what it meant to be the black sheep in her family. She talks about the empowering experience about figure modeling and how it helped her to overcome her disordered eating and how she came up with this concept in her art.
