Sermon Discussion Guide (for use at home this week)
Opening prayer: Thank you, Lord, for giving me a new identity in you alone; AMEN.
About Me
Think of the first time meeting someone. How do you introduce yourself? How would you describe yourself?
Into the Bible – 2 Timothy 3:1-4:5
Verse 1-5: Summarize Paul’s description of the “last days” in your own words. What is Paul’s warning?
Vv. 6-8: What is the attitude & the end result for people like this?
Vv. 10-13: Name three encouragements in these verses.
Vv. 14-15: Despite the dangers of vv. 1-8, what is the Christian’s reason for confidence?
Vv. 16-17: Identify three things we learn about the Bible in these verses.
Application
4 Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own house.” 5 He could not do any miracles there except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. Mark 6
In Sunday’s sermon, Pastor talked about the concept of “identity.” What is identity, and what is it not? Why is the spiritual concept of “identity” helpful - even necessary - for us to discuss?
In Sunday’s gospel reading from Mark 6, we see Jesus preach at his own hometown. What were the reactions of the people? Why did they react this way? Name 1-2 things we learn about Jesus from the gospel reading.
Look at the verse above. Identify the specific rebuke that Jesus gives in v. 4. Why was Jesus rejected in his own hometown? What do these verses (above) remind us about the work of God’s church today?
“I believe that I cannot by my own thinking or choosing believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me by the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith.” Considering what we learn about the Word of God in 2 Timothy 3-4, why are these words (from the Third Article) especially comforting? How do these words relate to the spiritual concept of “identity”?
“But as for you: Identity Introduction” Name the various identities & vocations that you carry out. What is the temptation in these titles, names, blessings, or responsibilities that Jesus gives? Identify two reasons why it is especially important for Christians to think about, discuss, or define “identity.”
Christians rejoice in Jesus. And we do so at all times & circumstances. From the sermon on Sunday, name two identities that are yours through the Word. Write a prayer thanking God for them, and asking for encouragement to faithfully live in this new identity.
Prayer: God of all power and might, you are the giver of all that is good. Help us love you with all our heart, strengthen us in true faith, provide us with all we need, and keep us safe in your care; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever; AMEN.
