2.8. Nonverbal Active Listening for Oral Historians

Listen Later

It's the second season of the More and More Every Day Podcast. Join us every day for short (10 minute) episodes to talk all things oral history and challenge yourself with a daily oral history prompt.

Today's prompt: Let’s work on our nonverbal active listening cues together. Select one nonverbal active listening cue and try it out! Interview a friend or family member with the intent to practice one of these nonverbal active listening cues: smiling, eye contact, head nods, mirroring, posture, whatever you think you need to practice!

Nonverbal active listening cues to practice:

  • Eye contact
  • Intermediate eye contact
  • Head nod
  • Note taking
  • Smiling
  • Slightly raised eyebrows
  • Upright posture
  • Body position that is leaned in toward the speaker
  • Mirroring
  • Manage the physical set up
