282 Ghosts and the Lives You Didn't Choose

Listen Later

Session 282 Cosmic Probabilities and Dream Jobs

Recorded on August 31, 1966.

Grab a drink, kick back, and let’s look at what our favorite "energy personality essence" had to say about the afterlife, alternate versions of ourselves, and why flying dreams are way cooler than your therapist thinks.

The "After-Party" of Physical Death

Seth kicks things off by reminding us that death isn't exactly a "lights out" situation. It’s more of a lingering transition where you get to play editor with your own life.

  • Consciousness is mobile and doesn't just snap like a rubber band when the body gives up; it stays connected to matter for a bit.
  • There is a "hovering" period where the personality hangs around the physical system but with new "freedoms."
  • During this time, you can blend or change aspects of your previous lives. Seth puts it beautifully: "the personality can merge, blend or change various aspects of his previous existences, using them as you, Joseph, use colors."
  • If you didn’t learn your lessons, you might end up in a "psychic reliving" of past experiences—basically a cosmic reenactment.

The Multiverse: You as a Doctor and Artist

Ever wonder what happened to that career path you didn't take? According to Seth, you’re actually living it right now in a "probable" system.

  • Joseph (Robert Butts) could have been a doctor. In fact, he spent three years in his dreams working out that life to see if he liked it.
  • Seth explains that "In the dream state you experienced literally a future life that existed as a definite possibility. You examined a probability, in other words, and chose another."
  • The "Doctor Joseph" actually exists in another dimension, and get this: that doctor probably dreams about a universe where he’s an artist.
  • We are all like "two limbs from the same tree," sharing root dreams to keep our inner identity straight across different realities.

Ghosts, Apparitions, and Uninvited Guests

Seth keeps it real about things that go bump in the night. It turns out "apparitions" are a mixed bag of cosmic phenomena.

  • You might be the ghost! You can appear as an apparition in other systems through projections.
  • Some apparitions are just "ideas of strong import" that manifest in physical terms.
  • Others are actual visitors from different systems who might not even realize you can see them.
  • Dream objects are "secondary constructions" that actually possess a fragmentary consciousness of their own.

Dreams: It’s Not Just Symbolism, It’s Travel

If you’ve been dreaming about falling or flying, Seth says stop looking for metaphors. You’re actually moving.

  • Flying dreams are "valid and actual experiences" of the inner self’s mobility.
  • Falling dreams represent a downward motion in your system or a "loss of form control" while you're projecting.
  • We use the dream state to try out alternatives and decide which probabilities we want to make "actual" in our physical lives.

The Psychic "Lightning Round"

Toward the end of the session, Jane (Ruburt) went into a deep state to pull some specific data for their friends, Don Wollheim and Frederick Fell.

  • Seth mentions a three-year-old boy named Jerry, a birthday cake incident involving fire, and a love for eating peanut butter with a spoon.
  • Other hits include a potbellied stove, lace curtains, the year 1906, and a red car (or maybe a toy wagon).
  • Even though Jane was exhausted and yawning by 9 PM, she stayed "far-out" enough to catch these impressions.
