287 Physical Objects Are Mass Hallucinations

Session 287 Cosmic Tangerines and Time-Traveling Art

Grab a snack and kick back, because we’re diving into some seriously trippy territory. We are looking at Session 287 from The Early Sessions, Book 7 of the Seth Material, recorded on September 21, 1966. If you thought your day was weird, wait until you hear what Seth has to say about reality being a "mass hallucination."

The Lowdown on Reality and Time

Seth starts things off by basically telling us that our clocks are useless. Experience isn't a layer cake of moments; it’s all about how intense the "vibe" is.

  • Intensity Over Duration: Experience is felt in terms of "intensities and value fulfillment." A five-minute dream can be more significant than a forty-year career if the intensity is high enough.
  • The Dream State: When you’re dreaming, you’re actually seeing reality with less "camouflage." As Seth puts it: "Later you may not recall it, but you have a more direct connection with reality in the dream state."
  • Mass Hallucinations: Everything you’re touching right now—your chair, your phone, that half-eaten taco—is a "mass hallucination." We’re constantly translating inner reality into physical objects while waking, and into "pseudoobjects" while dreaming.

The "Tangerine" Universe

Ever wondered how different dimensions or "systems" are laid out? Seth uses a surprisingly delicious analogy involving fruit.

  • The Membrane: Imagine the universe as a tangerine. The different systems are the segments, and the "uncamouflaged" areas are like that white, stringy membrane between the slices.
  • Boundary Zones: These uncamouflaged areas are the "inner roads" that both connect and divide systems. They are made of pure vitality without the "camouflage" of physical matter.
  • The Root Assumptions: You can’t just hop into another system and understand it. You’d be like a tourist without a map or a language guide because you wouldn't have the "proper root assumptions."

Projections and Artistic Time Travel

Seth gets into the "how-to" of consciousness travel, and it involves leaving your mental luggage behind.

  • Space-Time Skipping: If you travel through uncamouflaged areas, you don’t age. You could experience "centuries" of stuff in a literal flash of physical time.
  • Art as a Portal: A great painting is basically a concentrated explosion of experience. Seth explains that "the spacious present is always present" in a work of art.
  • True Motion: Forget your car or a rocket ship. Seth claims that "the only real motion is that of the traveling consciousness."
  • The Spiral/Accordion Vibe: After the session, Jane had visions of interlocked spirals and an "accordion" effect where time opens and closes. Talk about a mental workout!
