Every Monkey Wrench Is Secretly A Blessing

I was on my daily walk, and there’s a runner that I see almost every day, and we always say hello and cheer one another on as we pass each other. Some days when I’m feeling energetic enough I will jog with him a few times around the outdoor loop. He’s such a kind individual, and on our talk the other day he told me that we all have gifts. Like how a smart person can open a book and get the concept of it right away, and he said “that’s not me…but I can look at any day and find the beauty in it. There’s something to be learned in every moment.”

I hadn’t seen him for a few weeks, and on our recent talk I asked him where he’d been, and he said he was healing up an injured hamstring. He said he could’ve been upset about the injury, but he saw it as an opportunity to work on other areas that he’s weak in.

And I think that’s what we do, we have expectations of performing how we did yesterday, and some people would look at a hamstring injury as putting a monkey wrench in their plans…but he found a way to see the beauty in it.

He’s one of those individuals who lives a different life. He doesn’t own a cell phone and doesn’t use a lot of technology. He has lived a full life as he has owned multiple businesses, and is now retired at a young age from that, and only does day trading now.

As we continued to jog, he went on to tell me how the days will fly by so quickly, that him and his wife have a joke about it… as they’ll say, “it’s Friday already where did the time go, and then the next day they will say it’s Saturday…where did the time go?”

Further into our conversation he said there’s a lot of time in the day to do the things we want. He didn’t even bat an eyelash when he said this to me… “I ran 30 miles in 3 hours and 30 minutes yesterday. I could run 200 miles in a week if I just put in the time to do it…it’s amazing how much you can accomplish when you put your attention on what’s important to you…that there’s so much time in this life to do so many things.”

After he told me this I knew I was actually talking to superman. But he was on to something so profound and so simple…that what makes us come alive, if we put in the time we can do amazing things. The hours are going to pass us regardless, so where do you want to accumulate your hours? Do you want them to be on things that you despise and hate, or will you see the beauty in your day as you focus on what you truly like in the moment?

As he said earlier, that there are gifted people who can look at a book and decipher the message immediately, I told him that he can look at any situation and decipher the beauty within it…and I think that’s his super power. He doesn’t look at all the miles he has to run, he just finds a pretty trail or outdoor running loop and just enjoys his time on it.

We spend so much time in our lives thinking about where we don’t want to be, focusing on what we don’t want to be doing, and being upset at where we are…which then…we miss the beautiful place of where we truly are. My running friend told me how I’ve changed his life…and I was floored because I don’t do anything except wave to him and say some encouraging words from time to time when we chat…But the funny thing is his kindness does the same to me.

The people we stumble into upon the trails of our lives can change our lives if we allow them to. They help us to see a different view, they help us to step out of our shoes and see that there’s beauty in every moment…and that for every monkey wrench, there’s a lesson or chance that’s helping us to work on something else we are weaker in…until we heal and are ready to come back to what we’re strong in.

Today’s Personal Commitment:
What monkey wrench has come into your life that you’ve seen as a curse…and how can you pivot and see it as a blessing? Get a pad of paper out and take a look at the hard things that have happened to you over the past 5 years…

  • Write about how it affected at that time, and how you saw the event when it was happening. Write what you remember in going through it.
  • Then write about how that event brought you to somewhere better. And if it didn’t bring you to a better place or you’re still struggling with it, then write how you would like to see it and how it could be the lesson and blessing that you need?
