Eliphas Levi was a French esotericist, poet, and writer.  He wrote over 20 books on magic, Kabbalah, alchemical studies, and occultism.  Eliphas Levi was his pen name, an anagram of Alphonse Louis translated into Hebrew.  Levi gained renown as an original thinker and writer,  attracting during his lifetime attention in Paris and London amongst esotericists, and artists.
