3:5-6
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV) – [5] Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; [6] in all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.
1. It is prideful to make plans without God.
Lean not on Your Own Understanding
2. We cannot support ourselves with our own understanding.
3. We are not to rely on our own understanding.
2 Chronicles 14:11 (NJKV) – [11] And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said, “Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we REST on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!”
“If we don’t live in peace, rest and security, it’s because we haven’t yet learned to trust in our heavenly Father. We’re uncertain of His ability to take care of us and unsure of His desire to do so.” (Deborah Kern, Learning to Trust God)
4. We won’t find rest in our own understanding.
Proverbs 28:26 (NIV) – [26] He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe.
“God has given His Word to guide in every detail of life so our sanctification might be by the truth. It is therefore inexcusable to lean on our own poor finite intelligence.” (Ironside Commentaries)
Understanding (bee-NAW) means insight, discernment, wisdom, knowledge, and meaning.
5. Leaning on our own understanding leads to overthinking things.
“The evidence that overthinking is bad for you now is vast and overwhelming. If you are someone plagued by ruminations, you are unlikely to become happier before you can break that habit. I will go so far as to say if you are an overthinker, one of the secrets to your happiness is the ability to allay obsessive overthinking, to reinterpret and redirect your negative thoughts into more neutral or optimistic ones.” (Psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky)
6. God alone understands everything perfectly.
Job 28:20, 23 (NIV) – [20] “Where then does wisdom come from? Where does UNDERSTANDING dwell? [23] God UNDERSTANDS the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells.”
“God has graciously endowed human beings with the ability of understanding and comprehension, but this faculty is not infallible, and, therefore, we are to ask God for guidance at all times.” (The Complete Word Study Dictionary)
7. God’s understanding is always greater than our own.
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV) – [8] “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. [9] “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9 (MSG) – [8] “I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work.” GOD’s Decree. [9] “For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think.
