His daughters encouraged him to publish it and after two years of writing and dealing with rejections Adams published the work entitled Watership Down. Asked if he enjoyed writing Adams said "No, I hated it. But I did enjoy that I had the guts to persevere with it." Joseph Campbell noted “We must be willing to let go of the life we've planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us."
