“Bipolar Disorder” is a conceptual invention with no basis in science. It was created in a small plebiscite of psychiatrists who voted on the idea rather than using peer-reviewed studies. A person experiencing severe mood swings does not have a “disorder” or a “mental illness” but rather a meaningful and purposeful process of change and growth trying to come forth.
“Bipolar” refers to alternations between deep depression and manic highs. It’s the same as depression except that the person periodically breaks out of their oppressive funk by entering into a high manic state. They’re blocked from their ecstatic joy so the only way they can access it is through an unconscious “flip-the-switch” function. Processing the person’s problem removes both the depression and the mania.
In this episode, I discuss the case of a young woman diagnosed with “Bipolar Disorder” who came to me for help. During the session, she imagined her depression as a “thousand pound gorilla” sitting on her, and I helped her use this image to transform her problem and her life.
