James shows the end goal of enduring trials - the crown of righteousness. He also elaborates on the way of the "double-minded" man described earlier in the text. His "own desires" are temptations to evil. They will result in death. He should not delude himself by thinking this comes from God, but should acknowledge God's way as that which is "good" and "perfect," and obey Him instead.
