In this episode we discuss the three main sermon typeS.
Show Notes:
The three main types of sermons can be defined by their relationship to the text from which they are derived.
Topical – The topical sermon is a sermon built around a particular subject or idea. This type of sermon takes its subject from the text. While the text may yield one or more of the main points, the majority of the main points in a topical sermon come from other places in the Bible.
Textual – The textual sermon is usually based on one verse or phrase of Scripture. This kind of sermon takes its subject and its main points from the text. All the sub-points and other supporting materials come from other places in the Bible.
Expository – The expository sermon usually comes from a longer passage of Scripture than a textual sermon. This type of sermon may be built from a paragraph or from a whole book of the Bible. The expository sermon derives its subject, its main points, and all its subpoints from the passage under consideration. Other parts of the Bible may be used for supporting material, but the entire outline of the expository sermon can be found in the passage under consideration.
These are mere brief descriptions of the three major sermon types. In later episodes we will expand on each type of sermon, sharing definitions, advantages, disadvantages, and some balance concerning each sermon type.
