The History Of The Evergreen State

30- Mayor Bertha Knight Landes

Listen Later

Women first entered the public sphere in the early twentieth century as a result of the fight for women's suffrage and the prohibition movement. As a result of the enactment of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote, the idea of women participating in politics was no longer considered inappropriate.
When Bertha Knight Landes was elected mayor of Seattle in 1926, the city became the first large city in the United States to have a female mayor. She was only in office for a single two-year period, however.
Landes and her husband, Henry, relocated to Seattle in 1895 after Henry was appointed to the University of Washington faculty. She was the mother of three children and was involved in a number of women's organizations. She was the founder of the Women's City Club and the first president of the Washington State League of Women Voters (now the League of Women Voters). Landes' ability to lead was recognized early on, and she became one of the first women to serve on the Seattle City Council.
