Robert Berdella, known as The Butcher of Kansas City, brutally tortured and killed at least six young men between 1984 and 1987. After years of bullying as a child, the sudden loss of his father at age 16, being sexually assaulted by a co-worker as a teenager, Berdella was not mentally or emotionally equipped for everyday life. His trauma eventually manifested in violent fantasies of rape and torture to the point where he could not foster healthy relationships. Instead he kidnapped young male sex workers and turned them into his “playtoys,” by torturing them with electric shocks, injecting drain cleaners into their eyes, and sodomizing them. When his depravity revealed itself to the world, the community was shocked that this man, the friendly, neighborhood-watch leader, could have committed such abhorrent crimes.
