She had standards. And these standards came out of necessity. For years Harriet Tubman was a fugitive. The ONLY white people she could safely associate with were people who were willing to use their privilege to literally stand between her and the law. They were active abolitionists who had already decided it was worthwhile to risk their lives, standing and livelihood in the service of Black freedom. She could not afford to be anywhere near white people who had not yet made their decision to live and die for her freedom and our collective freedom. She could not risk her life to politically educate them.
