South Sudan is debating whether its universities should keep names inherited from the past or adopt titles that reflect local identity. Scholars like Dr Augustino Ting Mayai say many names were imposed and fail to connect with communities. Former minister Peter Adwok Nyaba recalls that some institutions were announced for political gain rather than careful planning. Examples like the Dr John Garang Memorial University show how naming can honour national figures.
