Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in 2-ish minutes a day, through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.
I'm your host Katie Jefcoat and we’re breaking down the building blocks of happiness.
Happiness scientists seem to agree that happiness is a two-pronged definition. The first prong is happiness in emotions. The second prong is satisfaction and purpose. You need both prongs to be fulfilled to achieve well-rounded happiness.
With that, there are three basic building blocks that determine one’s happiness. They are:
So how does this work? Imagine a pie chart. Roughly 50% of that pie chart is your genetic makeup. Then you have about 25% that are your circumstances and surroundings. Some experts think it might be less, but we’re talking ball-park numbers here. And that leaves about 25% of your happiness that is absolutely in your control, these are our habits, etc.
Frankly, that’s really all we need to make a big difference in our well-being. So this is where we focus, on the part we can control.
This looks like introducing the habits outlined in episode 306. Listening to this podcast everyday, which is a reminder to choose happiness. It also looks like prioritizing connection with the people you care about that also have a positive impact on you. Look, nobody has time for connection with the jerk down the street, so this is being intentional about connecting with others. But we know, connection is a big part of happiness.
